Zen Grass Native Zoysia Lawn

Botanical Name: Zoysia native hybrid ‘Zen Grass’
Family: Poaceae
Origin: Australian-bred native Zoysia hybrid
Plant Type: Evergreen to semi-evergreen warm-season turf grass

Overview

‘Zen Grass’ is a premium native hybrid Zoysia lawn bred for Australian conditions and exceptionally well suited to Adelaide and South Australian climates. It forms a dense, soft, fine-textured turf that is highly drought tolerant and requires less mowing and watering than many traditional lawn grasses.

This slow-growing, self-repairing lawn thrives in heat and sun while maintaining a neat, carpet-like appearance. Ideal for family gardens, courtyards and low-maintenance landscapes, it provides year-round greenery with minimal input.

Key Features

  • Mature Size: 5-10 cm when unmown; typically maintained at 20-40mm
  • Growth Rate: 10-20 cm per year lateral spread per growing season
  • Foliage: Fine, soft blades in mid-green to deep green tones; forms a dense, cushioned turf
  • Flowers: Insignificant grass seed heads in summer (usually removed by mowing)
  • Fragrance: Not fragrant
  • Seasonal Interest: Green and lush through warm months; may take on a light straw or bronze tint in winter dormancy in cooler areas
  • Wildlife Value: Provides habitat for beneficial soil organisms and insects
  • Tolerance: Excellent drought tolerance once established; Excellent heat tolerance; Good wear tolerance for family use; Moderate shade tolerance (best with at least 4–5 hours of sun); Good coastal tolerance (second-line; not direct salt spray); Light frost tolerant; may go semi-dormant in winter
  • Planting Density: Laid as turf or plugs spaced 15–30 cm apart for faster coverage
  • Pet Friendly: Safe for pets; tough enough for regular use

Where It Works Best

  • Sunlight: Full sun to part shade (best density in full sun)
  • Soil: Well-drained sandy, loam or improved clay soils; adaptable to a range of Adelaide soil types
  • Water Needs: Establishment: 2 deep soaks/week for 4–6 weeks. Established: Deep watering every 2–3 weeks in summer; far less than cool-season lawns
  • Maintenance: Low mowing frequency due to slow growth; Occasional fertiliser in spring and summer; Benefits from dethatching every few years if buildup occurs
  • Lifespan: Long-lived turf; can persist 20+ years with proper care
  • Climate Zones: Ideal for Mediterranean and temperate South Australia, especially Adelaide Plains and coastal suburbs
  • Soil pH: Broadly adaptable — slightly acidic to alkaline soils
