Smokey Coastal Rosemary — Sphere Topiary

Botanical Name: Westringia fruticosa 'Smokey' (Sphere topiary form)
Family: Lamiaceae
Origin: Australia (cultivar of native species; supplied as a shaped topiary sphere)
Plant Type: Evergreen shrub — pre-trained sphere topiary

Overview

'Smokey' is a grey-leafed form of coastal rosemary with a particularly fine, silvery leaf texture and soft blue-white flowers, presented here as a professionally shaped sphere topiary. The pre-trained ball form provides instant formal structure and garden sculpture while retaining all the remarkable toughness of the species — drought tolerance, coastal resilience, and year-round flowering. An exceptional combination of low-maintenance Australian native and formal garden design in a single plant.

Key Features

  • Mature Size: Maintained as a sphere 40–80 cm diameter (depending on pot size and trimming frequency); will naturally grow to 1.5 m H x 1.5 m W if unpruned
  • Growth Rate: Moderate; 20–35 cm per year untrimmed; responds well to regular clipping which maintains shape and encourages dense new growth
  • Foliage: Small, silvery-grey linear leaves in whorls of 4; distinctly more silver than standard Westringia fruticosa; fine, soft texture
  • Flowers: Small, pale blue to white tubular flowers; near year-round with peak spring and autumn; non-fragrant
  • Seasonal Interest: Silver foliage and flowers year-round; formal sphere shape provides constant structural interest
  • Wildlife Value: Flowers attract bees and small native insects throughout the year
  • Tolerance: Drought-tolerant once established; frost hardy; salt-tolerant (front-line coastal); wind-tolerant; heat-tolerant; clay-tolerant if free-draining
  • Planting Density: Feature/specimen: standalone (allow 1–1.5 m for sphere to develop); avenue or formal pairs: 1.5–2 m between centres
  • Pet Friendly: Non-toxic to cats and dogs

Where It Works Best

  • Sunlight: Full sun; maintains tightest sphere shape and best flower production in full sun
  • Soil: Well-drained loam, sandy loam, clay loam or gravelly soils; tolerates poor, dry soils; avoid waterlogging
  • Water Needs: Establishment: 2 deep soaks/week for 8–12 weeks. Established (in-ground): deep soak every 2–3 weeks in summer; rarely in winter. Established (pot): water when top 3–4 cm of mix is dry; reduce in winter.
  • Maintenance: Clip 2–3 times per year to maintain sphere shape (spring, summer and autumn); feed with slow-release native fertiliser in spring; mulch around base if in-ground; re-pot container specimens every 2–3 years
  • Lifespan: 15–25+ years with regular trimming
  • Climate Zones: Suited to all SA regions — metro, coastal (including frontline), Hills and inland; one of the toughest formal topiary options for SA conditions
  • Soil pH: Neutral to slightly alkaline; pH 6.0–8.0

Landscape & Design Ideas

  • Formal garden entrances and symmetrical pathway edging
  • Contemporary and minimalist gardens as structural sphere sculptures
  • Container topiary for pots, urns and large planters on patios and courtyards
  • Coastal gardens where few formal topiary plants will survive salt and wind

Why You Will Love It

Instant formal elegance from a plant that doesn't need cosseting — 'Smokey' sphere topiary brings silvery architectural drama to any garden while tolerating coastal winds, summer heat and drought that would destroy traditional topiary plants.
