Topiary 'Resilience' Lilly Pilly (Cone)
Botanical Name: Syzygium australe 'Resilience' (Cone)
Family: Myrtaceae
Origin: Eastern Australia
Plant Type: Evergreen shrub (clipped into a cone)
Overview
An advanced, nursery-grown cone — formal structure the day it lands, with none of the waiting. 'Resilience' is the psyllid-resistant lilly pilly, selected to keep its leaves smooth and glossy where older varieties pit and blister. Red–bronze new flushes mature to deep green, fluffy white flowers arrive in spring–summer with a soft sweet scent, and once established it shrugs off Adelaide heat, wind and coastal exposure.
Key Features
- Mature Size: 1.5–2.5 m H × 0.6–1.0 m W as a maintained cone (easily kept smaller)
- Growth Rate: 40-60 cm per year under good conditions
- Foliage: Glossy mid/deep-green leaves; naturally tight internodes for crisp outlines
- Flowers: Small, fluffy white sprays mainly spring–summer; pink–red berries may follow if not clipped after flowering
- Seasonal Interest: Evergreen structure with repeating colourful flushes; warm-season bloom and occasional berries
- Wildlife Value: Nectar for bees/beneficials; berries may feed birds; dense cover for small birds
- Tolerance: Drought-tolerant once established; heat, wind & coastal tolerant; light frost hardy; strong psyllid resistance
- Planting Density: Matched pair either side of an entry: 1.5–2 m apart • Formal row: space 0.8–1.2 m (tight line 0.6–0.8 m) • Pots: one per 50 cm container
- Pet Friendly: Yes — generally non-toxic; ripe berries are edible (moderation advised)
Where It Works Best
- Sunlight: Full sun to part shade (more sun = tighter cone & stronger colour)
- Soil: Well-drained loam, sandy loam or improved clay; avoid chronic waterlogging
- Water Needs: Establishment: 2 deep soaks/week for 8–12 weeks. Established: deep soak every 10–14 days in summer (more in heatwaves/pots); monthly in winter if dry
- Maintenance: Tip-clip 3–6×/yr to hold the cone and trigger new colour; clip after flowering if you want to limit fruit; feed in early spring with a low-phosphorus native fertiliser; mulch to conserve moisture
- Lifespan: 20-30+ years
- Climate Zones: Suited to temperate and Mediterranean SA gardens, including coastal areas
- Soil pH: Slightly acidic to neutral; tolerates mildly alkaline with good drainage
Landscape & Design Ideas
- Matched pair flanking a front door, gate or driveway entry — the classic use for an advanced cone
- Rhythmic allée along a path or boundary for a contemporary, formal look
- Statement container feature in courtyards and terraces; contrast with silver or blue groundcovers
- Anchor point in a native or Mediterranean planting where you need evergreen height and a clean line
Why You Will Love It
Advanced size, sharp shape and a variety bred to stay clean. Where standard lilly pillies can look bumpy and tired after a psyllid season, 'Resilience' holds smooth, glossy foliage — so the cone keeps reading crisp with only light, quick clips. Add season-long colour flushes and a soft floral fragrance, and it earns its place beside an entry or on a terrace for decades.
