Indigo Angel Tree Germander

Botanical Name: Teucrium fruticans 'Indigo Angel'
Family: Lamiaceae
Origin: Mediterranean (cultivar selection of western Mediterranean species)
Plant Type: Evergreen compact shrub

Overview

A refined compact selection of the beloved Tree Germander, Teucrium fruticans 'Indigo Angel' delivers everything that makes its parent species so popular — the gorgeous silver-grey aromatic foliage, the vivid blue flowers and the exceptional drought and coastal hardiness — in a neater, more manageable form suited to smaller Adelaide gardens and tighter planting spaces.
'Indigo Angel' is selected specifically for its compact habit and intensely coloured cobalt blue flower spikes, which contrast strikingly against the silver-grey woolly foliage. Flowers appear almost year-round in Adelaide's mild climate, providing an extended season of soft colour and valuable nectar for bees. Native to Mediterranean climates, it is almost perfectly matched to Adelaide's hot dry summers and cool wet winters, performing beautifully in borders, low hedges, mass plantings and containers with minimal care once established. Drainage is the single most important requirement.

Key Features

  • Mature Size: 0.8–1.0 m H x 0.8–1.2 m W (compact, bushy, rounded spreading habit)
  • Growth Rate: Moderate; 20–30 cm per year; responds well to light tip pruning which promotes dense growth
  • Foliage: Small, aromatic, grey-green leaves with silvery-white woolly undersides and stems; the silver tones glow in the landscape; evergreen year-round; strongly aromatic when brushed
  • Flowers: Vivid cobalt blue to indigo two-lipped flowers in terminal spikes at branch tips; produced almost year-round with peak flowering in spring and summer; more intensely coloured than the standard species; small but produced in great abundance; highly attractive to bees
  • Fragrance: Foliage strongly aromatic (mint family); flowers not significantly fragrant
  • Seasonal Interest: Silver-grey aromatic foliage year-round with a luminous, glowing quality; vivid cobalt blue flowers for most of the year; most prolific in spring and summer; light tip prune after peak flowering to maintain density
  • Wildlife Value: Outstanding bee plant — flowers are consistently buzzing with bees and beneficial insects; excellent pollinator support throughout an extended season
  • Tolerance: Excellent drought tolerance once established; excellent heat tolerance; excellent wind tolerance; outstanding coastal and salt spray tolerance (frontline suitable); frost hardy to approximately -5°C; tolerates poor, rocky and low-fertility soils; dislikes waterlogging and wet feet — drainage is critical
  • Planting Density: Tight low hedge: 2–3 plants per metre (40–50 cm spacing); standard border/mass planting: 1–2 plants per metre (60–80 cm spacing); suitable for containers (30 cm+)
  • Pet Friendly: Generally regarded as non-toxic; aromatic foliage may deter browsing

Where It Works Best

  • Sunlight: Full sun; best flower production, most compact habit and strongest silver foliage colour in full sun; will tolerate very light part shade but becomes looser and flowers less
  • Soil: Well-drained to dry soils essential; thrives in poor, sandy, rocky and low-fertility soils; tolerates Adelaide's coastal limestone soils and alkaline conditions; excellent drainage is non-negotiable — wet feet will cause decline or death
  • Water Needs: Establishment: water well for first 8–12 weeks to establish; ensure drainage is excellent. Established: very low; deep soak every 2–4 weeks in summer; little to no watering in cooler months; one of the most drought-hardy shrubs available for SA
  • Maintenance: Light tip prune after peak flowering to maintain compact shape and encourage fresh growth; avoid cutting back hard into old woody stems; do not fertilise heavily — thrives in low-fertility conditions; apply a light native or low-phosphorus slow-release fertiliser in spring if desired; keep mulch away from the crown
  • Lifespan: Long-lived; 10–20+ years with good drainage; replace plants if they become excessively woody or open
  • Climate Zones: Near-perfect match for Adelaide's Mediterranean climate; excels across Adelaide Plains, coastal suburbs, Fleurieu Peninsula, Yorke Peninsula and all exposed SA coastal positions; one of the best-performing Mediterranean shrubs for SA
  • Soil pH: Neutral to alkaline preferred; tolerates Adelaide's limestone soils extremely well

Landscape & Design Ideas

  • Frontline coastal garden border and mass planting where the silver foliage and cobalt blue flowers create a soft, shimmering Mediterranean palette that handles salt winds with ease
  • Low formal or informal hedge along pathways, driveways and garden edges where the compact form, aromatic foliage and near year-round blue flowers create a sensory border
  • Water-wise and Mediterranean garden planting combined with Lavender, Rosemary, Salvia and Westringia for a cohesive, drought-hardy silver-blue planting palette
  • Rockery and gravel garden specimen where its tolerance of poor, rocky soils and exceptional drainage needs are perfectly met
  • Bee and pollinator garden feature providing almost year-round blue flowers and outstanding nectar support with minimal maintenance

Why You Will Love It

'Indigo Angel' is one of those plants that works hardest in the most difficult conditions. The silver-grey foliage glows in full sun, the cobalt blue flowers attract bees from the moment they open, and the whole plant shrugs off Adelaide's hot dry summers, coastal winds and poor soils without complaint. It is a near-perfect Mediterranean shrub for South Australian gardens — compact, beautiful, tough and reliably rewarding.
