Winter Lights Lilly Pilly

Botanical Name: Syzygium australe ‘Winter Lights’
Family: Myrtaceae
Origin: Eastern Australia (cultivar selection)
Plant Type: Evergreen shrub (compact, dense habit)

Overview

Syzygium australe ‘Winter Lights’ is a standout lilly pilly selected for its exceptional winter colour, compact growth and strong performance in South Australian conditions. Perfectly suited to Adelaide’s Mediterranean climate, it forms a dense, well-structured shrub with glossy green foliage and intense red to burgundy new growth, particularly prominent through the cooler months when colour is most valued.

In spring to early summer, fluffy white flowers appear, attracting bees and beneficial insects, followed by pink to red berries if plants are left untrimmed. With good psyllid resistance, heat tolerance and a naturally tidy habit, ‘Winter Lights’ is ideal for hedging, screening, feature planting and large containers in modern and native-inspired landscapes.

Key Features

  • Mature Size: 2.5–4 m H × 1.5–2 m W
(can be easily maintained at 1.5–2.5 m with regular pruning)
  • Growth Rate: 40-60 cm per year under good conditions
  • Foliage: Glossy evergreen leaves; spectacular red, crimson and burgundy new growth, especially strong in autumn–winter
  • Flowers: Small, fluffy white flowers in spring–early summer
  • Fruit: Pink to red berries in summer–autumn if not clipped immediately after flowering
  • Fragrance: Foliage lightly aromatic when crushed; flowers mildly scented
  • Seasonal Interest: Evergreen structure year-round with peak colour in cooler months; flowers and berries add seasonal highlights
  • Wildlife Value: Flowers attract bees and pollinators; berries feed birds; dense foliage provides nesting shelter
  • Tolerance: Drought tolerant once established; excellent heat tolerance; wind tolerant; coastal tolerant (second-line); light frost tolerant; good psyllid resistance
  • Planting Density: Hedges/screens: 0.8–1 m spacing (closer for tighter hedges)
    Specimen planting: 1.5–2 m apart
  • Pet Friendly: Generally regarded as pet-safe; berries edible in moderation

Where It Works Best

  • Sunlight: Full sun to part shade (full sun gives strongest colour and densest growth)
  • Soil: Well-drained loam, sandy loam or improved clay soils; performs well in raised beds and large pots; avoid prolonged waterlogging
  • Water Needs: Establishment: 2 deep soaks/week for 8–12 weeks. Established: deep soak every 10–14 days in summer (more in heatwaves); minimal watering in winter if dry
  • Maintenance: Mulch in spring; tip-prune after each growth flush to maintain density; clip after flowering if fruit is not desired; apply slow-release native-safe fertiliser in early spring
  • Lifespan: 20–30+ years
  • Climate Zones: Ideal for temperate and Mediterranean South Australia — Adelaide Plains, Fleurieu Peninsula, coastal and suburban gardens
  • Soil pH: Slightly acidic to neutral preferred; tolerates mildly alkaline soils with good drainage
