Robusta Snake Plant / Mother-in-Law's Tongue
Botanical Name: Sansevieria robusta (syn. Dracaena)
Family: Asparagaceae
Origin: Tropical Africa
Plant Type: Evergreen succulent perennial
Overview
Sansevieria robusta is a bold, architectural snake plant forming upright fans of thick, sword-shaped grey-green leaves. Virtually indestructible, it thrives on neglect, tolerates deep shade or bright sun, and stores water in its fleshy leaves to ride out long dry spells. Equally at home as a striking indoor feature or a structural container and garden plant in SA's warm, frost-free spots.
Key Features

- Growth Rate: Slow; 5โ10 cm per year; upright, clumping habit spreading slowly by rhizomes
- Foliage: Thick, rigid, sword-shaped grey-green leaves with subtle banding; bold sculptural form
- Flowers: Occasional spikes of small, lightly fragrant greenish-white flowers; infrequent and grown chiefly for foliage
- Seasonal Interest: Architectural evergreen foliage year-round
- Wildlife Value: Minimal; primarily a structural foliage plant
- Tolerance: Outstanding drought tolerance; heat-tolerant; deep-shade tolerant; frost sensitive (protect below 2โ3 ยฐC); will rot in wet or waterlogged soils
- Planting Density: Feature/specimen: single plant per pot; mass planting: 40โ50 cm apart
- Pet Friendly: Toxic to cats and dogs โ ingestion can cause drooling, vomiting and diarrhoea; keep out of reach
Where It Works Best
- Sunlight: Bright indirect light to full sun outdoors; tolerates low light indoors
- Soil: Very free-draining โ cactus/succulent mix or sandy soil; never waterlogged
- Water Needs: Establishment: light watering every 1โ2 weeks. Established: fortnightly in summer, allowing soil to dry fully between waterings; monthly or less in winter โ overwatering is the main cause of failure.
- Maintenance: Almost none; wipe dust from leaves; remove any damaged leaves at the base; minimal feeding
- Lifespan: 10โ20+ years
- Climate Zones: Frost-free coastal and metro Adelaide outdoors; indoors anywhere in SA; protect from Hills and inland frosts
- Soil pH: Neutral (pH 6.0โ7.5)
Landscape & Design Ideas
- Bold indoor feature in pots for low-light corners
- Architectural container plant for sheltered patios and entries
- Structural accent in warm, free-draining succulent and gravel gardens
Why You Will Love It
Few plants are this forgiving โ Sansevieria robusta delivers strong, sculptural form indoors or out, survives on almost no water and minimal light, and asks for nothing more than warmth and good drainage.
