Coastal Poa ‘Kingsdale’ / Coastal Tussock Grass

Botanical Name: Poa poiformis ‘Kingsdale’
Family: Poaceae
Origin: Southern Coastal Australia
Plant Type: Evergreen native tussock grass

Overview

A refined, improved form of the coastal tussock grass, Poa poiformis ‘Kingsdale’ delivers soft blue-green foliage in tidy, arching clumps perfectly suited to Adelaide’s coastal, Mediterranean, and inland climates. Naturally adapted to wind, drought, salt and poor soils, it brings movement, texture and year-round structure to native gardens, coastal plantings, verges and low-maintenance landscapes. Foliage may shift to silvery-blue in summer sun and soft gold tones in winter or dry periods. While not fragrant, the foliage has a clean, fresh grassy aroma when handled.

Key Features

  • Mature Size: 0.5–0.7 m H × 0.4–0.6 m W — compact, rounded tussock
  • Growth Rate: 20-40 cm per year under good conditions
  • Foliage: Fine blue-green to grey-green strappy leaves; develops silvery tints in high sun, and gold or tan tones in winter or drought
  • Flowers: Cream to purplish seedheads on slender stems in spring–summer, adding soft ornamental movement
  • Seasonal Interest: Evergreen structure with seasonal plumes and shifting foliage tones
  • Wildlife Value: Provides shelter for insects and small birds; seedheads support insects and habitat complexity
  • Tolerance: Highly drought-tolerant (once established); Heat and wind tolerant; Excellent coastal and salt-wind tolerance; Light frost hardy; Thrives in sandy or rocky soils
  • Planting Density: 4–6 plants per m² for natural drifts or mass planting
  • Pet Friendly: Non-toxic to cats and dogs

Where It Works Best

  • Sunlight: Full sun to part shade (most compact and colourful in full sun)
  • Soil: Free-draining sandy, loamy or gravelly soils; tolerates poor, slightly saline and alkaline SA soils; avoid waterlogging
  • Water Needs: Establishment: 2 deep soaks/week for 8–12 weeks. Established: deep soak every 14–21 days in summer; minimal in winter
  • Maintenance: Very low maintenance — cut back clumps to 10–15 cm every 2–3 years to refresh; remove spent flower stems; avoid fertilisers
  • Lifespan: 8–15+ years in suitable conditions
  • Climate Zones: Excellent for Mediterranean and temperate SA — Adelaide, Eyre & Yorke Peninsulas, Fleurieu, coastal and inland regions
  • Soil pH: Neutral to slightly alkaline; tolerates mildly acidic soils

Landscape & Design Ideas

  • Coastal Gardens: Perfect for exposed beachfront sites, dunes, coastal banks and windswept gardens
  • Native & Waterwise Gardens: Combine with dianella, lomandra, leucophyta, chrysocephalum and kangaroo paw
  • Modern Minimalist Designs: Plant in rhythmic drifts for soft, textural movement
  • Edges & Pathways: Softens retaining walls and paving
  • Mass Planting: Creates flowing, meadow-like plantings on slopes or verges
