Pink Frangipani

Botanical Name: Plumeria rubra (pink form)
Family: Apocynaceae
Origin: Cultivated selection; species native to Mexico, Central America and the Caribbean
Plant Type: Deciduous small tree

Overview

Pink Frangipani is the classic tropical frangipani: clusters of rose-pink blooms with a sunny yellow throat and a sweet, heady perfume. It brings an instant holiday feel to courtyards, pool surrounds and sunny patios, and its bare sculptural branches give winter structure. Like all plumerias, it thrives in Adelaide's warm, frost-free spots, and potted plants can be moved under cover during winter cold snaps.

Key Features

  • Mature Size: 3–5 m H × 3–4 m W in-ground in Adelaide; compact and manageable when container-grown
  • Growth Rate: Moderate to fast; 30–50 cm per year in warm conditions
  • Foliage: Large glossy green leaves; deciduous in winter, showing sculptural branches
  • Flowers: Classic rose-pink single blooms with a warm yellow throat; sweetly fragrant; clusters from late spring through summer into autumn (Nov–Apr in SA)
  • Seasonal Interest: Late spring leaf-out → summer flower clusters → winter architectural branching
  • Wildlife Value: Attracts Butterflies; Good for Pollinators (fragrant blooms draw night-flying moths)
  • Tolerance: Drought-Tolerant (once established), Heat-Tolerant, Coastal-Tolerant. Frost sensitive—protect below 2 °C; avoid cold, waterlogged soils in winter
  • Planting Density: Specimen: 3–4 m apart. Excellent in large containers (minimum 50–60 cm diameter)
  • Pet Friendly: Toxic. Milky latex sap causes skin and eye irritation; ingestion causes gastrointestinal upset in pets

Where It Works Best

  • Sunlight: Full sun (6–8+ hrs) for best flowering and compact habit
  • Soil: Very well-drained sandy/loam; raised beds or large pots if clay; avoid winter-wet sites
  • Water Needs: Establishment: 2–3 deep soaks/week for 8–12 weeks. Established: deep soak every 10–14 days in summer; keep almost dry in winter, especially when leafless
  • Maintenance: Low-moderate; prune lightly in late winter/early spring to shape; mulch in spring; balanced or slightly higher-phosphorus fertiliser every 2–4 weeks in the growing season (avoid excess nitrogen)
  • Lifespan: 25–50+ years
  • Climate Zones: Suited to warm, frost-sheltered positions in Mediterranean/temperate SA (coastal Adelaide and the Adelaide plains are ideal); marginal in the Adelaide Hills without winter protection
  • Soil pH: Slightly acidic to neutral (6.0–7.0); tolerates mildly alkaline if drainage is excellent

Landscape & Design Ideas

Use it as a focal-point specimen near patios, pools or outdoor dining, where the flowers and evening fragrance can be enjoyed up close. It suits tropical and resort-style gardens as well as Mediterranean courtyards. Grow it in a large decorative pot on a sunny terrace so it can be sheltered in winter, and underplant with heat-lovers like Portulaca, Evolvulus or Gazania, or pair with Agave, Bougainvillea, Hibiscus and Lomandra.

Why You Will Love It

Pink frangipani is the flower most people picture when they think of a summer holiday. The rose-pink clusters and sweet evening scent turn a patio or pool area into somewhere you want to sit. It is tough, low-water once established and easy to grow in a large pot, so it suits almost any sunny Adelaide garden.
