Monsoon Frangipani

Botanical Name: Plumeria rubra 'Monsoon'
Family: Apocynaceae
Origin: Australian cultivated selection; species native to Mexico, Central America and the Caribbean
Plant Type: Deciduous small tree

Overview

Monsoon Frangipani carries dramatic blooms that open deep red at the centre and wash out to soft pink at the petal tips, giving every cluster a glowing two-tone look. The flowers are fragrant and carried in generous clusters over glossy leaves. Like all plumerias, it thrives in Adelaide's warm, frost-free spots, and potted plants can be moved under cover during winter cold snaps.

Key Features

  • Mature Size: 3–5 m H × 3–4 m W in-ground in Adelaide; compact and manageable when container-grown
  • Growth Rate: Moderate to fast; 30–50 cm per year in warm conditions
  • Foliage: Large glossy green leaves; deciduous in winter, showing sculptural branches
  • Flowers: Single blooms with a deep red centre that fades through to pale pink at the petal tips; fragrant; clusters from late spring through summer into autumn (Nov–Apr in SA)
  • Seasonal Interest: Late spring leaf-out → summer flower clusters → winter architectural branching
  • Wildlife Value: Attracts Butterflies; Good for Pollinators (fragrant blooms draw night-flying moths)
  • Tolerance: Drought-Tolerant (once established), Heat-Tolerant, Coastal-Tolerant. Frost sensitive—protect below 2 °C; avoid cold, waterlogged soils in winter
  • Planting Density: Specimen: 3–4 m apart. Excellent in large containers (minimum 50–60 cm diameter)
  • Pet Friendly: Toxic. Milky latex sap causes skin and eye irritation; ingestion causes gastrointestinal upset in pets

Where It Works Best

  • Sunlight: Full sun (6–8+ hrs) for best flowering and compact habit
  • Soil: Very well-drained sandy/loam; raised beds or large pots if clay; avoid winter-wet sites
  • Water Needs: Establishment: 2–3 deep soaks/week for 8–12 weeks. Established: deep soak every 10–14 days in summer; keep almost dry in winter, especially when leafless
  • Maintenance: Low-moderate; prune lightly in late winter/early spring to shape; mulch in spring; balanced or slightly higher-phosphorus fertiliser every 2–4 weeks in the growing season (avoid excess nitrogen)
  • Lifespan: 25–50+ years
  • Climate Zones: Suited to warm, frost-sheltered positions in Mediterranean/temperate SA (coastal Adelaide and the Adelaide plains are ideal); marginal in the Adelaide Hills without winter protection
  • Soil pH: Slightly acidic to neutral (6.0–7.0); tolerates mildly alkaline if drainage is excellent

Landscape & Design Ideas

Use it as a focal-point specimen near patios, pools or outdoor dining, where the flowers and evening fragrance can be enjoyed up close. It suits tropical and resort-style gardens as well as Mediterranean courtyards. Grow it in a large decorative pot on a sunny terrace so it can be sheltered in winter, and underplant with heat-lovers like Portulaca, Evolvulus or Gazania, or pair with Agave, Bougainvillea, Hibiscus and Lomandra.

Why You Will Love It

The red-to-pink blooms of Monsoon are richer and moodier than the usual pastel frangipani, so it stands out in a pot or a tropical bed. You still get the sweet evening scent and easy, low-water care, with a colour that looks good from across the garden.
