Harney St Frangipani / Darwin Harney Frangipani
Botanical Name: Plumeria rubra 'Harney St' (syn. 'Darwin Harney')
Family: Apocynaceae
Origin: Darwin, Northern Territory (cultivated selection; species native to Mexico, Central America, Caribbean)
Plant Type: Deciduous small tree
Overview
Harney St Frangipani is a Top End selection from Darwin, loved for its large single blooms in soft blends of pink, white and golden yellow. The flowers are intensely fragrant with a sweet, jasmine-like perfume, carried in generous clusters over glossy green leaves. It is a vigorous, fast-establishing frangipani that makes a showy specimen tree or a statement container plant. Like all plumerias, it thrives in Adelaide's warm, frost-free microclimates, and container plants can be moved under cover during winter cold snaps.
Key Features
- Mature Size: 3–5 m H × 3–4 m W in-ground in Adelaide (can reach 7 m+ in tropical climates); compact and manageable when container-grown
- Growth Rate: Moderate to fast; 30–50 cm per year in warm conditions; establishes in 2–3 years
- Foliage: Large glossy green leaves; deciduous in winter, showcasing sculptural branches
- Flowers: Large single blooms in soft pink and white with a golden-yellow to orange centre; intensely fragrant (jasmine-like); clusters from late spring through summer into autumn (Nov–Apr in SA)
- Seasonal Interest: Late spring leaf-out → summer clusters of pink-and-gold blooms → winter architectural branching
- Wildlife Value: Attracts Butterflies; Good for Pollinators (fragrant blooms draw night-flying moths)
- Tolerance: Drought-Tolerant (once established), Heat-Tolerant, Coastal-Tolerant. Frost sensitive—protect below 2 °C; avoid cold, waterlogged soils in winter
- Planting Density: Specimen: 1 tree per 9–16 m² (3–4 m apart). Excellent in large containers (minimum 50–60 cm diameter)
- Pet Friendly: Toxic. Milky latex sap causes skin and eye irritation; ingestion causes gastrointestinal upset in pets
Where It Works Best
- Sunlight: Full sun (6–8+ hrs) for best flowering and compact habit
- Soil: Rich, very well-drained sandy/loam; raised beds or large pots if clay; add perlite/pumice for drainage; avoid winter-wet sites
- Water Needs: Establishment: 2–3 deep soaks/week for 8–12 weeks. Established: deep soak every 10–14 days in summer; keep almost dry in winter, especially when leafless
- Maintenance: Low-moderate; prune lightly late winter/early spring after frost risk to shape; mulch in spring; balanced or slightly higher phosphorus fertiliser every 2–4 weeks in the growing season (avoid excess nitrogen); easy propagation from cuttings
- Lifespan: 25–50+ years
- Climate Zones: Suited to Mediterranean/temperate SA in warm, frost-sheltered positions (coastal Adelaide, Adelaide plains ideal); marginal in Adelaide Hills without winter protection
- Soil pH: Slightly acidic to neutral (6.0–7.0); tolerates mildly alkaline if drainage is excellent
Landscape & Design Ideas
Plant Harney St as a focal-point specimen near patios, pools or outdoor dining areas, where the large pink-and-gold flowers and evening fragrance can be enjoyed up close. Its warm colouring suits tropical and resort-style gardens as well as Mediterranean courtyards. Grow it in a large decorative pot beside a doorway or on a sunny terrace—pots let you follow the sun and shelter it from winter cold. Underplant with heat-loving, drought-tolerant companions like Portulaca, Evolvulus or Gazania, or pair with Agave, Aloe, Bougainvillea, Hibiscus, Kangaroo Paw and Lomandra. The bare, sculptural winter branches contrast well with evergreen plantings.
Why You Will Love It
Big, soft pink blooms washed with gold give a sunset look that stands out even among frangipanis. The sweet, jasmine-like perfume is strongest on warm evenings, making it a natural fit for summer entertaining. It grows quickly for a frangipani, so you get a flowering specimen sooner. Low water needs once established suit Adelaide's dry summers, and with a warm, sheltered spot it rewards you with months of fragrant flowers every year.
