Overview

The Monarch Squat's silhouette, drawn upwards. Same soft square with a rounded base and the same true matte surface, but tall enough to give a plant presence at eye level — a clipped cone, an olive standard, or a screening shrub that needs the height to earn its place.

Stirling is a mid grey that reads as stone against render, timber and brick alike. Crafted from a fibre-clay composite — magnesium chloride reinforced with fibreglass — it's UV-stable and weatherproof, and the depth is real: these are proper root-run pots, not tall containers with shallow bowls in the top. A drainage plug is included, so you can plant directly or use it as a cache pot.

Choose Your Size

  • Small — 8 L: 21 × 26 cm (W × H). Opening 12 cm — fits a plant up to a 70 mm nursery pot. Around 1 bag of potting mix to fill.
  • Medium — 29 L: 31 × 37 cm (W × H). Opening 21 cm — fits a plant up to a 175 mm nursery pot. Around 1 bag of potting mix to fill.
  • Large — 76 L: 42 × 50 cm (W × H). Opening 29 cm — fits a plant up to a 250 mm nursery pot. Around 3 bags of potting mix to fill.
  • Extra Large — 179 L: 55 × 66 cm (W × H). Opening 41 cm — fits a plant up to a 300 mm nursery pot. Around 6 bags of potting mix to fill.

The opening is narrower than the pot is wide, so choose by the opening rather than the litres — particularly on the Small, which takes a tube stock or a 70 mm plant rather than a full nursery pot.

Sealing & Care

Fibre-clay is naturally porous, so it is worth brushing a pot and ornamental sealer around the inside of the pot before you plant. It forms a waterproof barrier that stops moisture and fertiliser salts wicking out through the wall — the cause of the pale tide marks and chalky white bloom you see on older pots — and it adds years to the life of the pot.

Sealers are water-based and brush on like paint; most hardware stores carry one. Coat the inside walls and the base, let it cure as directed, then plant as normal. It is worth the extra half hour on any pot going indoors, onto a deck, or onto paving where a damp ring would show — and together with the drainage plug supplied, it is what lets you use these inside without marking the floor.

Complete the Look

Pair your Monarch Tall with a matching plant from our range and a bag of premium potting mix — check the size guide above for the plant size that fits and how much mix you'll need.

Why You'll Love It

Height is the hardest thing to add to a garden and the easiest to overlook. A pair of these either side of an entry does more for a facade than any amount of planting at ground level.
