Sarabande Silver Grass / Maiden Grass
Botanical Name: Miscanthus sinensis 'Sarabande'
Family: Poaceae
Origin: China, Japan, Korea; cultivar selection
Plant Type: Deciduous ornamental grass
Overview
'Sarabande' is a compact, fine-textured form of Japanese silver grass with narrow, arching blades featuring a distinctive silver mid-rib stripe, creating an overall silver-green shimmer across the clump. In autumn it produces elegant copper-pink plumes that mature to silver-white and persist through winter, providing exceptional multi-season interest. More compact and restrained than many maiden grasses, it's well-suited to smaller gardens while retaining the full beauty of the genus in SA's temperate climate.

- Planting Density: Feature/specimen: 1β1.2 m apart; mass/screen: 80 cmβ1 m apart

- Maintenance: Cut back hard to 15β20 cm in late winter/early spring before new growth emerges; divide every 4β5 years if clumps become congested; mulch in spring after cutting back
- Lifespan: 10β20+ years; rejuvenates reliably with annual cut-back
- Climate Zones: Suited to temperate and Mediterranean SA; excellent across Adelaide metro, Hills and coastal second-line
