Mexican Fleabane / Mexican Daisy / Seaside Daisy / Spanish Daisy

Botanical Name: Erigeron karvinskianus
Family: Asteraceae
Origin: Mexico & Central America
Plant Type: Evergreen shrub

Overview

Mexican Fleabane is a cheerful, carpeting daisy for South Australian gardens. It forms soft mounds of fine green foliage smothered in dainty daisies that open white and age to shell-pink/rose, creating a two-tone effect for months. Superb for path edges, rock walls, cottage and coastal plantings — low water, high charm.

Key Features

  • Mature Size: 0.15–0.30 m H × 0.5–1.0 m W
  • Growth Rate: 20-40 (spread) cm per year under good conditions
  • Foliage: Fine, mid-green leaves; neat, spreading/clumping habit
  • Flowers: Prolific from spring to autumn; blooms open white and blush pink with yellow centres
  • Seasonal Interest: Long flowering spring–autumn (often spot blooms year-round in mild coastal sites)
  • Wildlife Value: Attracts bees, butterflies; seed heads can interest small birds
  • Tolerance: Drought-tolerant (once established), heat-tolerant, wind-tolerant, coastal-tolerant; light frost (protect in hard frost); clay-tolerant with improved drainage
  • Planting Density: Mass planting: 3–5 plants per m² depending on spread
  • Pet Friendly: Yes — generally non-toxic to pets (ingestion of any plant may cause mild tummy upset)

Where It Works Best

  • Sunlight: Full sun to light part shade (best flowering in sun)
  • Soil: Well-drained loam or sandy loam; copes with poor/rocky soils; avoid waterlogging
  • Water Needs: Establishment: 2 deep soaks/week for 8–12 weeks. Established: deep soak every 10–14 days in summer; monthly in winter if dry
  • Maintenance: Mulch lightly; shear back after main flushes to rebloom and keep compact; deadhead as desired; light feed in early spring
  • Lifespan: 5–10+ years (long-lived with periodic renewal from self-seeding)
  • Climate Zones: Suited to temperate and Mediterranean SA gardens, including coastal areas
  • Soil pH: Acid, Neutral, Alkaline — adaptable

Landscape & Design Ideas

  • Soft edging between pavers and along paths/steps; spills beautifully over walls
  • Mass plant for a meadowy, low-maintenance groundcover and weed suppression
  • Tuck under roses, shrubs and grasses for romantic cottage texture
