Mignonne Sasanqua Camellia
Botanical Name: Camellia sasanqua 'Mignonne'
Family: Theaceae
Origin: Japan; cultivar selection
Plant Type: Evergreen shrub
Overview
'Mignonne' is a graceful sasanqua camellia bearing soft pink, informal double blooms through autumn and into winter, set against glossy, fine-textured deep-green foliage. More sun-tolerant and faster-growing than japonica camellias, sasanquas like 'Mignonne' make superb evergreen hedges, screens and espaliers for SA gardens, flowering generously when much of the garden has wound down for the year.
Key Features
- Mature Size: 2–3 m H x 1.5–2.5 m W (readily kept smaller with clipping)
- Growth Rate: Moderate; 15–30 cm per year; dense, bushy and well-branched with an upright habit
- Foliage: Small, glossy deep-green leaves; fine-textured and dense — excellent for hedging
- Flowers: Soft pink, informal double blooms; autumn into winter; lightly fragrant
- Seasonal Interest: Autumn–winter flowering; glossy evergreen foliage year-round
- Wildlife Value: Cool-season flowers provide nectar and pollen for bees
- Tolerance: Frost hardy to moderate; more sun- and drought-tolerant than japonicas once established; dislikes alkaline soils and waterlogging
- Planting Density: Formal hedge: 60–80 cm apart; informal screen: 80 cm–1 m apart; feature: 1.5 m clearance
- Pet Friendly: Non-toxic to cats and dogs
Where It Works Best
- Sunlight: Full sun to part shade; tolerates more sun than japonica camellias
- Soil: Moist, humus-rich, free-draining acidic to neutral soil; mulch to keep roots cool
- Water Needs: Establishment: deep soak 2–3 times per week for 12–16 weeks. Established: deep soak weekly in summer (twice weekly in heatwaves); every 2–3 weeks in winter.
- Maintenance: Clip after flowering to shape or maintain a hedge; apply camellia/azalea food in spring; mulch annually; iron chelate if foliage yellows
- Lifespan: 30–50+ years
- Climate Zones: Suited to temperate SA — Adelaide metro, Hills and coastal gardens
- Soil pH: Acidic to neutral (pH 5.5–6.5)
Landscape & Design Ideas
- Evergreen flowering hedge or privacy screen
- Espalier against walls and fences for a refined vertical feature
- Autumn–winter colour in courtyards and mixed shrub borders
