Injune Bottlebrush
Botanical Name: Callistemon ‘Injune’ (syn. Melaleuca ‘Injune’)
Family: Myrtaceae
Origin: Australia (garden hybrid selection)
Plant Type: Evergreen shrub to small tree
Overview
Callistemon ‘Injune’ is a compact, upright bottlebrush bred for strong colour, reliability and adaptability in South Australian conditions. It produces masses of rich crimson-red bottlebrush flowers from spring into early summer, often followed by lighter repeat flowering in autumn. Dense, fine-textured foliage and a naturally tidy habit make it an excellent choice for hedging, screening or feature planting in Adelaide gardens.
Well suited to heat, wind and coastal exposure, ‘Injune’ is a tough, waterwise native once established, yet refined enough for modern and suburban landscapes. Its nectar-rich blooms are highly attractive to birds and pollinators, adding strong ecological value alongside year-round structure.

- Growth Rate: 30-50 cm per year under good conditions

- Fragrance: Not strongly fragrant
- Seasonal Interest: Bold spring flowering with evergreen structure and colour year-round
- Wildlife Value: Excellent nectar source for honeyeaters, bees and butterflies; dense foliage provides shelter for small birds
- Tolerance: Drought tolerant once established; excellent heat and wind tolerance; second-line coastal tolerant; light frost hardy (protect young plants in colder inland or Hills locations)
- Planting Density: Hedging or screening: 0.8–1.2 m apart; Feature planting: 1.5–2.5 m apart
- Pet Friendly: Non-toxic to cats and dogs
Where It Works Best
- Sunlight: Full sun for best flowering and dense growth; tolerates light part shade
- Soil: Adaptable to sandy, loamy or clay-loam soils; prefers free-draining ground; mound or improve drainage on heavy clay
- Water Needs: Establishment: 2 deep soaks/week for 8–12 weeks. Established: deep soak every 10–14 days in summer (weekly in heatwaves); minimal watering in winter
- Maintenance: Low — light prune after flowering to maintain shape and encourage repeat blooms; mulch annually; apply low-phosphorus native fertiliser in early spring
- Lifespan: 15–25+ years
- Climate Zones: Ideal for Mediterranean and temperate South Australia — Adelaide Plains, Fleurieu Peninsula, Yorke Peninsula, Barossa and coastal districts
- Soil pH: Slightly acidic to neutral preferred; tolerates mild alkalinity with good drainage
