India Frangipani

Botanical Name: Plumeria rubra 'India'
Family: Apocynaceae
Origin: Tropical Americas (cultivated selection; PSA Reg #154)
Plant Type: Deciduous small tree / large shrub

Overview

Bring bold tropical drama to Adelaide and South Australian gardens with this spectacular large-flowered frangipani. 'India' forms an upright, tall-growing frame that leafs out in late spring and carries very large clusters of intensely perfumed, textured yellow-orange flowers with striking reddish-brown veins through summer and early autumn. One of the most highly fragranced frangipanis available, with a unique nutmeg scent strongest at night. The massive 10 cm blooms on thick structural stems create dramatic tropical impact. It loves heat, needs sharp drainage, and excels in warm microclimates, sunny courtyards and coastal suburbs.

Key Features

  • Mature Size: 2.5–5.0 m H × 3–4 m W in Adelaide climate (smaller in large pots—1.5–2.5 m)
  • Growth Rate: 30–50 cm per year under good conditions (fast-growing; tall grower)
  • Foliage: Large leathery leaves with distinctive red veins; deciduous in winter, showcasing sculptural branches
  • Flowers: Very large 10 cm (4 inches) diameter flowers; strongly textured, heavily overlapped rounded petals that curve inward; stunning yellow-orange with reddish-brown veins creating grainy texture; flowers borne on thick structural stems; blooms summer–autumn (December–April in SA); prolific bloomer with large inflorescences
  • Fragrance: Highly fragrant—distinctive nutmeg frangipani scent; perfume release strongest at night
  • Seasonal Interest: Late spring leaf-out → high-summer, intensely scented bold bloom → winter architectural branching
  • Wildlife Value: Attracts butterflies and pollinators; scented blooms draw inquisitive visitors
  • Tolerance: Drought-tolerant (once established); exceptional heat tolerance; frost-sensitive (does not tolerate frost—protect below 2°C; bring containers indoors or provide frost protection); coastal-tolerant in sheltered positions; wind-tolerant (stake young plants); will not tolerate waterlogging
  • Planting Density: Specimen/avenue: 1 tree per 9–16 m² (3–4 m apart); Excellent in large containers (minimum 50–60 cm diameter)
  • Pet Friendly: Toxic—milky sap can irritate skin; ingestion may cause GI upset in pets; discourage contact with sap

Where It Works Best

  • Sunlight: Full sun (6–8+ hours) for best flowering and prolific blooming
  • Soil: Exceptionally well-drained nutrient-rich soil; prefers rich, fertile, free-draining soil; raised beds or large pots if clay; avoid winter-wet sites
  • Water Needs:
    • Establishment: Deep soak twice weekly for 8–12 weeks
    • Established: Deep soak every 10–14 days in summer; water sparingly in cooler months—keep almost dry in winter, especially when leafless
  • Maintenance: Low to moderate maintenance; prune lightly in late winter/early spring after frost risk to shape; mulch in spring; use balanced fertiliser or high-phosphorus feed in early summer for strong roots and prolific blooms; easy to propagate from tip cuttings; virtually pest-free in Adelaide
  • Lifespan: 25–50+ years
  • Climate Zones: Suited to temperate & Mediterranean SA in warm, frost-sheltered positions—coastal Adelaide ideal; thrives in warm microclimates; requires protection from frost
  • Soil pH: Slightly acidic to neutral (pH 6.0–7.0); tolerates mildly alkaline if drainage is excellent
