Low Horizon Westringia / Coastal Rosemary ‘Low Horizon’

Botanical Name: Westringia fruticosa ‘Low Horizon’
Family: Lamiaceae
Origin: Australia
Plant Type: Evergreen groundcover shrub (ultra-low, compact form)

Overview

A superb ultra-low, compact form of coastal rosemary, Westringia fruticosa ‘Low Horizon’ is ideal for Adelaide and South Australian gardens where heat, wind, salt and low water are major challenges. Growing as a dense, ground-hugging shrub, it maintains a crisp, tidy outline with almost no clipping. Small white-to-pale-lilac flowers appear mainly in spring and intermittently through the warmer months. Its fine grey-green foliage may pick up subtle silver tones in coastal or dry summer conditions. Though not fragrant, the foliage has a light, fresh native scent when crushed.

Key Features

  • Mature Size: 0.25–0.35 m H × 0.8–1.2 m W – extremely low, spreading, cushion-like form
  • Growth Rate: 15-30 cm per year under good conditions
  • Foliage: Fine grey-green leaves in neat whorls; lightly aromatic when crushed; develops soft silver foliage tints during hot, dry periods or near the coast
  • Flowers: Small white to pale lilac blooms, mainly in spring with spot flowering in warm weather
  • Seasonal Interest: Neat evergreen structure year-round with gentle flowering in spring; foliage shifts slightly silver in summer dryness
  • Wildlife Value: Attracts native bees and beneficial insects; dense matting growth offers shelter for very small ground-dwelling insects
  • Tolerance: Highly drought-tolerant once established; excellent salt and wind tolerance; handles reflected heat and coastal exposure; light frost hardy
  • Planting Density: Borders or low edges: 0.6–0.8 m spacing; Mass planting: 1–1.2 m apart; Groundcover drift: 3–4 plants per linear metre
  • Pet Friendly: Generally non-toxic and safe for pets (discourage chewing of any ornamental foliage)

Where It Works Best

  • Sunlight: Full sun to part shade (best density and bloom in full sun)
  • Soil: Free-draining sandy loam, coastal sand, or improved clay; avoid waterlogging
  • Water Needs: Establishment: 2 deep soaks/week for 8–12 weeks. Established: deep soak every 14–21 days in summer (more in heatwaves); monthly in winter if dry
  • Maintenance: Minimal – shape lightly 1–2 times per year if required; tip prune after main flowering; mulch in spring; light native-safe fertiliser in early spring if desired
  • Lifespan: 15-25+ years
  • Climate Zones: Ideal for temperate and Mediterranean SA regions, including Adelaide plains, coastal suburbs, Yorke Peninsula and Fleurieu Peninsula
  • Soil pH: Slightly acidic to alkaline; thrives in Adelaide’s limestone soils

Landscape & Design Ideas

  • Ultra-low edging for modern gardens, pathways and driveways
  • Coastal and poolside plantings where salt, wind and heat are extreme
  • Waterwise and Mediterranean gardens with lomandra, dianella, eremophila and olives
  • Mass planting for a soft, clipped-look groundcover with almost no pruning
  • Rockeries, retaining wall tops and verge plantings where space is tight and heat radiates
  • Contemporary landscapes needing tidy structure without height

Why You Will Love It

‘Low Horizon’ is one of the tidiest, toughest low-growing natives available for South Australia. It thrives in coastal winds, poor soils and intense summer heat, stays neat with minimal pruning, and provides year-round evergreen structure with subtle flowering. Whether used as edging, groundcover or mass planting, it delivers reliable, low-maintenance performance in modern, coastal and waterwise designs.
