Mystic Spires Salvia

Botanical Name: Salvia longispicata × farinacea ‘Mystic Spires’
Family: Lamiaceae
Origin: Hybrid selection (Mexico/U.S. ancestry)
Plant Type: Evergreen to semi-evergreen perennial shrub

Overview

A standout, long-flowering salvia for Adelaide’s Mediterranean climate, Salvia ‘Mystic Spires’ is prized for its deep indigo–violet flower spikes that appear from late spring through autumn, often continuing until the first cold snaps of winter. Compact, upright and very floriferous, it brings reliable colour to borders, pollinator gardens, cottage designs and mixed perennial plantings. The mid-green foliage is softly aromatic when brushed and may develop subtle silvery or dusky tints during dry summers or cool weather. While not considered fragrant in bloom, the foliage holds a pleasant herbal scent. Exceptionally heat- and drought-tolerant once established, it performs beautifully across South Australia in free-draining soils.

Key Features

  • Mature Size: 0.6–0.9 m H × 0.6–0.8 m W (compact mounding shrub)
  • Growth Rate: 25–40 cm per year under good conditions
  • Foliage: Mid-green, softly textured leaves; lightly aromatic; may develop soft silvery or bluish tints in heat or dryness
  • Flowers: Abundant deep blue–violet spires from late spring to late autumn; strongest flush in early summer with continual repeat blooms
  • Fragrance: Flowers not fragrant; foliage lightly aromatic with a clean herbal scent
  • Seasonal Interest: Exceptionally long flowering season; evergreen to semi-evergreen foliage with seasonal tinting
  • Wildlife Value: Highly attractive to bees, butterflies and honeyeaters; one of the best long-season nectar plants for SA gardens
  • Tolerance: Drought-tolerant once established; excellent heat tolerance; wind-tolerant; coastal-tolerant (second-line); light frost hardy; dislikes waterlogged soils
  • Planting Density: 3–4 plants per m² for mass planting; 40–50 cm spacing in borders; suitable for 30–40 cm pots
  • Pet Friendly: Non-toxic to cats and dogs

Where It Works Best

  • Sunlight: Full sun for heaviest flowering; tolerates light part shade but blooms reduce noticeably
  • Soil: Free-draining sandy or loamy soils; performs very well in Adelaide’s slightly alkaline conditions
  • Water Needs: Establishment: 2 deep soaks/week for 8–12 weeks. Established: deep soak every 10–14 days in summer; very little water needed in cooler months
  • Maintenance: Remove spent flower spikes to promote continual blooming; prune by one-third in late winter to maintain shape and encourage dense new growth; avoid high-nitrogen fertilisers
  • Lifespan: 5–10+ years in well-drained soils
  • Climate Zones: Ideal for Mediterranean and temperate SA — Adelaide Plains, foothills, Fleurieu, Yorke Peninsula, coastal suburbs
  • Soil pH: Neutral to alkaline; tolerates slightly acidic soils with good drainage
