Sea Lavender ‘White Star’

Botanical Name: Limonium perezii 'White Star'
Family: Plumbaginaceae
Origin: Canary Islands
Plant Type: Evergreen/semi-evergreen shrub

Overview

A compact sea lavender/statice with large, leathery, blue-green leaves and papery white flower domes that rise above the foliage through the warmer months. Tough, coastal- and drought-tolerant once established—ideal for sunny borders, rockeries, seaside gardens and pots in South Australia.

Key Features

  • Mature Size: 0.5-0.6 m H x 0.4-0.6 m W
  • Growth Rate: 20-40 cm per year under good conditions
  • Foliage: Low rosette of thick, leathery, blue- to silvery-green leaves
  • Flowers: Lilac buds opening to pure/ivory white, papery blooms on airy stems; excellent fresh or dried. Flowers spring–autumn in warm climates
  • Seasonal Interest: Year-round tidy mound; long season of white “cloud” blooms through the warm months, fading cleanly for winter structure
  • Wildlife Value: Nectar-rich sprays attract bees and pollinators
  • Tolerance: Drought & heat tolerant once established; coastal & wind hardy; light frost tolerant; needs free-draining soil
  • Planting Density: 30–40 cm apart for a tight edge (≈2.5–3/m); 45–60 cm for a looser drift
Pet Friendly: Non-toxic; supervise curious pets (any plant can upset tummies if chewed)

Where It Works Best

  • Sunlight: Full sun to part shade
  • Soil: Well-drained loam, sandy loam or clay loam
  • Water Needs: Establishment: 2 deep soaks/week for 8-12 weeks. Established: deep soak every 10-14 days in summer; monthly in winter if dry.
  • Maintenance: Deadhead/cut spent stems to the base after flowering; minimal feeding; great for cutting/drying
  • Lifespan: 5-10+ years
  • Climate Zones: Suited to temperate and Mediterranean SA gardens, including coastal areas
  • Soil pH: Prefers neutral–alkaline conditions

Landscape & Design Ideas

  • Coastal/gravel borders for drought-smart, low care colour
  • Front-of-border edging or rock gardens; space 30–40 cm for a continuous ribbon
  • Feature pots & cutting patch—papery blooms for fresh or dried arrangements

Why You Will Love It

‘White Star’ delivers months of sparkling white bloom on a compact, no-fuss plant that loves sun, salt and dry spells—beautiful in the garden and brilliant in the vase.
