Revoluta Flax Lily / Dianella Flax Lily
Botanical Name: Dianella revoluta
Family: Asphodelaceae
Origin: Australia
Plant Type: Strappy grass-like perennial
Overview
Dianella revoluta is a hardy, architectural flax lily widely suited to Adelaide’s Mediterranean climate. Forming upright clumps of deep blue-green, narrow strappy foliage, it provides strong year-round structure and thrives in heat, dryness and poor soils once established. In mid-spring to early summer it produces airy stems of violet-blue starry flowers, followed by attractive deep-blue to purple berries that add seasonal colour and wildlife value. Naturally adapted to sandy, gravelly and open woodland soils, it performs well across SA, including coastal areas, verges, native gardens and low-maintenance landscapes. While not fragrant, the foliage gives off a subtle, clean grassy scent when crushed.
Key Features
- Mature Size: 0.4–0.8 m H × 0.4–0.6 m W (clumping, upright habit)
- Growth Rate: 15–30 cm per year under good conditions
- Foliage: Narrow, deep blue-green strappy leaves; upright, tidy form; may develop bronze or olive tones in extreme heat or dryness
- Flowers: Violet-blue star-shaped flowers in mid-spring to early summer; decorative deep-blue/purple berries follow in late spring–summer
- Seasonal Interest: Evergreen foliage provides reliable structure year-round, while spring–early summer flowers and berries add colour and movement
- Wildlife Value: Flowers attract native bees and small pollinators; berries offer seasonal bird appeal
- Tolerance: Highly drought tolerant once established; heat and wind tolerant; excellent coastal tolerance; copes with poor, sandy or gravelly soil; light frost hardy; tolerates mildly heavy soils when drainage is improved but dislikes prolonged waterlogging
- Planting Density: Mass planting: 4–6 plants per m²; Edging or drifts: 1–2 plants per linear metre
- Pet Friendly: Generally regarded as non-toxic, though some sources note berries may be mildly irritating if eaten in quantity. Best to discourage chewing
Where It Works Best
- Sunlight: Full sun to part shade (full sun gives strongest colour and tightest habit)
- Soil: Free-draining sandy or loamy soil; tolerates improved clay; avoid boggy sites
- Water Needs: Establishment: 2 deep soaks/week for 8–12 weeks. Established: deep soak every 10–14 days in summer; monthly in winter if dry
- Maintenance: Very low-maintenance. Remove spent flower stems; comb out or cut back older foliage every 2–3 years; mulch annually; apply a light native-safe fertiliser in early spring if desired
- Lifespan: 15-25+ years
- Climate Zones: Well suited to Mediterranean and temperate South Australia — including Adelaide plains, foothills, Fleurieu Peninsula, Yorke Peninsula and coastal suburbs
- Soil pH: Adaptable to acidic, neutral and mildly alkaline soils
Landscape & Design Ideas
- Mass plant for a clean, architectural effect in borders or median strips
- Use as a tidy, evergreen edging plant in gravel or native gardens
- Great for coastal, low-water and modern landscapes needing a structural base layer
- Suitable for containers and entry planting
