Stiff Flat-sedge / Stiff-leaf sedge

Botanical Name: Cyperus vaginatus
Family: Cyperaceae
Origin: Australia (widespread; indigenous to the Adelaide region)
Plant Type: Evergreen sedge / perennial (grass)

Overview

Cyperus vaginatus (Stiff-leaf/Flat-sedge) forms tidy, upright clumps of stiff, mid-green stems and leaves, topped in the warm months by brown spikelet heads. A tough SA native for swales, borders and coastal gardens, it thrives in full sun to part shade with free drainage and is excellent for low-maintenance, water-wise planting.

Key Features

  • Mature Size: 0.3-1.0 m H x 0.4-0.5 m W (can reach to ~2 m in wetter sites)
  • Growth Rate: 20-40 cm per year under good conditions
  • Foliage: Upright, clumping, grass-like; clean, architectural habit
  • Flowers: Brown spikelets mainly spring–summer; ornamental rather than showy
  • Seasonal Interest: Evergreen clumps with warm-season seed heads for texture
  • Wildlife Value: Dense cover for small fauna; seed heads support insects; good habitat planting
  • Tolerance: Drought-tolerant (once established), heat-tolerant, wind-tolerant
coastal-tolerant; light–moderate frost (protect fresh growth in hard frosts)
  • Planting Density: Shrub/grass borders: 0.4–0.6 m centres for a dense, cohesive effect
  • Pet Friendly:  Yes — generally regarded as non-toxic to pets. Cyperus species (e.g., umbrella papyrus) are listed as non-toxic; ingestion of any plant matter may still cause mild tummy upset.

Where It Works Best

  • Sunlight: Full sun to part shade
  • Soil: Clay or loam with good drainage; also occurs on sands/alluvium near watercourses (avoid chronic waterlogging in gardens)
  • Water Needs: Establishment: 2 deep soaks/week for 8–12 weeks. Established: deep soak every 10–14 days in summer; monthly in winter if dry (more frequent in very sandy sites)
  • Maintenance: Mulch; comb or cut back old stems in late winter to refresh; divide clumps every few years
  • Lifespan: 15-25 years
  • Climate Zones: Suited to temperate and Mediterranean SA gardens, including coastal areas
  • Soil pH: Acid, Neutral, Alkaline — broadly adaptable

Landscape & Design Ideas

  • Mass plant for textural, low-water borders and swales
  • Naturalise in native/coastal schemes; great edge to paths and ponds
  • Feature in narrow beds where a slim vertical grass look is needed

Why You Will Love It

A set-and-forget SA native that brings clean, vertical texture, thrives in local soils with minimal care, and stays looking neat year-round — ideal for modern, water-wise designs.
