Botanical Name: Duranta repens (syn. D. erecta) ‘Geisha Girl’
Family: Verbenaceae
Origin: Tropical Americas (West Indies to Central/South America)
Plant Type: Evergreen shrub

Overview

‘Geisha Girl’ is a floriferous, lightly weeping duranta for South Australian gardens. It forms a tidy, glossy green shrub smothered in rich violet-purple flowers with frilled white edges through the warm months, often followed by showy orange berries. Ideal for low-maintenance borders, feature planting and informal hedging in coastal and Mediterranean climates.

Key Features

  • Mature Size: 1.5-3 m H x 1-2 m W
  • Growth Rate: 30-60 cm per year under good conditions
  • Foliage: Evergreen, glossy mid-green leaves; clip-responsive, naturally rounded/weeping habit
  • Flowers: Warm-season flushes (spring–autumn); nectar-rich and long-lasting
  • Seasonal Interest: Reliable year-round structure; peak spring–autumn bloom; colourful berries after flowering
  • Wildlife Value: Flowers attract bees and butterflies; birds may take the berries (see safety note below)
  • Tolerance: Drought-tolerant (once established), heat-tolerant, wind-tolerant
coastal-tolerant; light frost (protect from hard frost)
  • Planting Density: Shrub borders: 1 plant per metre (dense) or 1 per 1.5 m for a looser effect
  • Pet Friendly: No — toxic to pets and people (especially the berries); remove fruit where children/pets are present

Where It Works Best

  • Sunlight: Full sun to part shade (heaviest flowering in full sun)
  • Soil: Well-drained loam, sandy loam or improved clay loam; avoid waterlogging
  • Water Needs: Establishment: 2 deep soaks/week for 8–12 weeks. Established: deep soak every 10–14 days in summer; monthly in winter if dry
  • Maintenance: Mulch in spring; tip-prune after flowering to keep compact (can hard-prune late winter if needed); light feed in early spring. (Note: some stems may carry small thorns.)
  • Lifespan: 15-25 years
  • Climate Zones: Suited to temperate and Mediterranean SA gardens, including coastal areas
  • Soil pH: Acid, Neutral, Alkaline — adaptable
