Pure Silk Sasanqua Camellia

Botanical Name: Camellia sasanqua 'Pure Silk'
Family: Theaceae
Origin: Cultivar (species native to Japan)
Plant Type: Evergreen large shrub to small tree

Overview

One of Australia's most popular and widely planted hedging camellias, Camellia sasanqua 'Pure Silk' has earned an outstanding reputation for its vigorous growth, elegant flowers and exceptional versatility across a wide range of garden applications. Its medium informal double blooms open from pink buds to reveal pure white petals softly shaded with pink at the edges, creating a refined two-tone display from autumn through to early winter.
Fast-growing, upright and naturally developing graceful pendulous laterals, 'Pure Silk' can reach impressive heights when left unpruned but responds beautifully to clipping for formal hedges and screens. More sun-tolerant and faster-growing than Camellia japonica, it performs reliably in Adelaide's climate across a range of positions. A genuinely outstanding camellia that has been delighting Australian gardeners for decades.

Key Features

  • Mature Size: 3.0–5.0 m H x 1.5–2.5 m W (vigorous upright habit with pendulous laterals; can be maintained as a hedge from 1.0–4.0 m)
  • Growth Rate: Fast; 40–60 cm per year; one of the fastest-growing sasanqua camellias available
  • Foliage: Glossy dark green oval leaves; dense, evergreen year-round; creates an excellent backdrop and hedge structure between flowering seasons
  • Flowers: Medium informal double blooms; pink buds open to pure white petals shaded with pink at the edges; lightly fragrant; produced prolifically from mid-autumn through to early winter (April to June/July in SA)
  • Fragrance: Lightly fragrant; subtle sweet camellia scent
  • Seasonal Interest: Dense glossy foliage year-round; pink buds followed by white and pink flowers through autumn and early winter providing elegant colour when the garden is quiet; prune and feed after flowering in late winter; fresh new growth in spring and summer
  • Wildlife Value: Autumn and winter flowers provide nectar for bees and pollinators; dense foliage provides excellent shelter and nesting habitat for small birds
  • Tolerance: Frost hardy once established; drought resistant once established; more sun-tolerant than Camellia japonica; pollution resistant; shelter from harsh winds recommended for best flower quality; dislikes alkaline soils and waterlogging
  • Planting Density: Tight hedge: 1–2 plants per metre (60–80 cm spacing); Standard hedge/screen: 1 plant per metre (80 cm–1.0 m spacing); Specimen: 2.0–2.5 m apart; suitable for large containers (50 cm+)
  • Pet Friendly: Non-toxic to cats and dogs

Where It Works Best

  • Sunlight: Full sun to part shade; tolerates more sun than Camellia japonica; morning sun with afternoon shade is ideal in hotter inland Adelaide positions; can withstand morning sun in winter unlike many paler camellias
  • Soil: Humus-rich, well-drained acidic to neutral soil; incorporate compost and aged manure before planting; avoid Adelaide's alkaline soils unless heavily amended or grow in containers with camellia/azalea potting mix
  • Water Needs: Establishment: deep soak 2–3 times/week for 8–12 weeks. Established: deep soak every 7–10 days in summer; fortnightly in spring and autumn; monthly in winter; mulch well to retain moisture and keep roots cool
  • Maintenance: Prune after flowering (late winter) to maintain shape and encourage bushy growth; left unpruned it develops an attractive cascading habit; feed with camellia/azalea fertiliser in spring after pruning and again in late summer; apply organic mulch annually; monitor for scale insects and sooty mould
  • Lifespan: Very long-lived; decades to generations with correct soil conditions and care
  • Climate Zones: Well suited to Adelaide's coastal and metropolitan areas, Fleurieu Peninsula and sheltered foothills positions; performs well across SA in most warm and sheltered positions
  • Soil pH: Acidic to neutral (pH 5.0–6.5); sensitive to alkaline soils; test and amend regularly or grow in containers with specialist potting mix

Landscape & Design Ideas

  • Tall formal hedge or grand driveway screen — 'Pure Silk' is one of the most striking hedging camellias available and delivers magnificent results at scale
  • Espalier against a sheltered south or east-facing fence or wall for a showstopping flat screen in a narrow space
  • Feature specimen allowed to develop its natural pendulous habit for a graceful informal small tree in courtyards, beds and garden borders
  • Windbreak or screen planting along exposed boundaries where its vigour, frost and drought resistance provide reliable shelter
  • Combine with Azaleas, Daphne and Gardenias for a classic acid-loving garden with layered seasonal interest from autumn through spring

Why You Will Love It

'Pure Silk' is a camellia with genuine star quality. The pink buds opening to white with pink-edged petals are exquisite, the growth rate is outstanding, and the versatility across hedge, specimen and espalier applications is unmatched. It is one of the most reliably impressive plants you can put in an Adelaide garden, and once it reaches its stride it is simply breathtaking.
