Flinders Range Wattle

Botanical Name: Acacia iteaphylla
Family: Fabaceae
Origin: Flinders Ranges & eastern South Australia
Plant Type: Evergreen shrub to small tree

Overview

Acacia iteaphylla is a striking, fast-growing wattle with elegant, arching branches and long, narrow, grey-green phyllodes. From late autumn into winter it produces masses of golden-yellow, globular flower clusters that brighten gardens when little else is in bloom. Hardy and adaptable, it is excellent for screening, windbreaks, or as a feature plant in SA’s Mediterranean and semi-arid landscapes.

Key Features

  • Mature Size: 3–5 m H x 3–4 m W (can be pruned to shape or kept smaller)
  • Growth Rate: 20-50 cm per year under good conditions
  • Foliage: Narrow, elongated phyllodes; grey-green to silvery tone; arching habit
  • Flowers: Golden-yellow “pom-poms” in late autumn–winter; lightly fragrant
  • Seasonal Interest: Strong winter flowering; year-round silvery foliage
  • Wildlife Value: Attracts pollinating insects; provides shelter for small birds
  • Tolerance: Very drought-hardy once established; frost hardy to –6 °C; excellent for arid and coastal gardens (including exposed second-line coastal); tolerates poor, shallow, rocky soils.
  • Planting Density: Screening: 1.5–2m apart; Mixed border/mass: 1–1.5m; Specimen: 3–4m from next large shrub/tree
  • Pet Friendly: Non-toxic / pet-friendly (as with any plant, ingestion of large amounts may cause mild tummy upset).

Where It Works Best

  • Sunlight: Full sun (best) to light shade
  • Soil: Adaptable to a wide range; sandy, loamy, rocky, and shallow soils; prefers well-drained
  • Water Needs: Establishment: 2 deep soaks/week for 8–12 weeks. Established: deep soak every 3–4 weeks in summer (weekly in heatwaves); seldom in winter—only if dry
  • Maintenance: Prune lightly after flowering to maintain shape and density; mulch in spring; tolerates harder pruning if rejuvenation needed
  • Lifespan: 10–20 years (occasionally longer in ideal conditions)
  • Climate Zones: Suited to temperate & Mediterranean SA; second-line coastal OK
  • Soil pH:  Neutral to slightly alkaline

Landscape & Design Ideas

  • Dense, fast-growing privacy hedge or screen
  • Winter colour feature in native beds
  • Attractive silvery foliage contrast plant
  • Excellent for habitat gardens supporting birds and insects
  • Tough windbreak for rural, coastal, or exposed sites

Why You Will Love It

Resilient, low-maintenance, and striking all year, Acacia iteaphylla shines in winter with its bright golden flowers and provides structure and screening with its elegant, silvery foliage. A quintessential SA native that thrives on neglect yet rewards generously.
