Variegated Shell Ginger
Botanical Name: Alpinia zerumbet ‘Variegata’
Family: Zingiberaceae (ginger family)
Origin: East Asia (Japan–Taiwan) & tropical Asia
Plant Type: Evergreen rhizomatous perennial (semi-evergreen in cooler spots)
Overview
A bold, tropical-looking clumping ginger prized for its broad leaves streaked gold and green. In warm positions around Adelaide it may produce pendant clusters of fragrant, pearly “shell” flowers in late spring–summer. Thrives in part shade with moisture and excellent drainage, giving year-round colour and lush texture to Mediterranean SA gardens.
Key Features
- Mature Size: 1.0–1.5 m H × 0.8–1.2 m W (clumping, can be kept smaller in pots)
- Growth Rate: 30-60 cm per year under good conditions
- Foliage: Large, lance-shaped leaves boldly variegated gold and green; evergreen where protected
- Flowers: Pendant sprays of white, shell-like blooms flushed pink/yellow; lightly fragrant; late spring–summer (most reliable in warm, sheltered microclimates)
- Seasonal Interest: Striking foliage spring–autumn; tropical presence year-round; flowers in warmer spots
- Wildlife Value: Flowers attract bees and beneficial insects; clumps provide shelter for small skinks and insects
- Tolerance: Handles Adelaide heat with mulch and regular summer water; dislikes waterlogging and hot, reflected afternoon sun; light frosts may scorch leaves—protect or cut back and it reshoots; tolerates coastal conditions away from direct salt spray
- Planting Density: Mass/low screen: 60-90 cm apart, Mixed border: 70-90 cm apart, Specimen/pot: one plant per 35-45 cm diameter pot
- Pet Friendly: Generally regarded as non-toxic; ingestion of large amounts may cause mild tummy upset
Where It Works Best
- Sunlight: Part shade to bright, filtered light; morning sun OK; avoid harsh afternoon sun inland
- Soil: Rich, free-draining loam improved with compost; thrives in raised beds or large containers
- Water Needs: Establishment: 1-2x deep soaks/week for 6–8 weeks. Established: deep soak every week in summer (twice weekly in heatwaves); seldom in winter—only if dry
- Maintenance: Remove old/tatty canes and frost-scorched leaves in late winter; mulch spring; light feed with organic or slow-release fertiliser in spring–summer; divide clumps every 3–4 years if crowded
-
Lifespan: Long-lived clumps (10+ years) with regular division/refresh
- Climate Zones: Excellent for Adelaide plains and coastal suburbs; in the Hills give frost protection or grow in pots you can move to shelter
- Soil pH: Neutral to slightly acidic/alkaline (well-drained)
