Plant Type: Strappy grass-like perennial (sedge)
Overview
Tough, moisture-loving native sedge for wetlands, rain gardens and low spots. Forms dense clumps of arching, medium-green leaves with upright seed spikes in spring–summer. Great for habitat, erosion control and mass planting; will cope with periodic inundation and seasonal wet feet.
Key Features
- Mature Size: 0.8–1.2 m H × 0.6–1 m W (flower stems to ~1.5 m)
- Growth Rate: 20-40 cm per year under good conditions
- Foliage: Arching, medium to bright green, coarse strappy leaves
- Flowers: Brown-green spikelets in spring–summer (ornamental seed heads; not showy)
- Seasonal Interest: Fresh green spring flush; persistent seed heads through summer
- Wildlife Value: Shelter and nesting for small birds; habitat for frogs; seed for finches
- Tolerance: Frost Hardy, Heat-Tolerant (if kept moist), Wind-Tolerant, Coastal-Tolerant (second line)
- Planting Density: Mass planting: 3–5 plants/m²; Edges/drifts: 30–50 cm apart
- Pet Friendly: Generally non-toxic; ingestion of any plant material may upset pets’ stomachs
Where It Works Best
- Sunlight: Full sun to part shade
- Soil: Moist to wet loam or clay; tolerates seasonal waterlogging
- Water Needs: Establishment: Keep consistently moist; 2–3 deep soaks/week for 8–12 weeks; Established: Keep evenly moist; in hot SA summers water weekly or more often unless planted at a pond/swale margin
- Maintenance: Mulch to retain moisture; cut back old foliage late winter; remove spent seed stems. Feed lightly in spring (general slow-release; low-P native blend optional)
- Lifespan: 5-10+ years (divide/refresh clumps as needed over time)
- Climate Zones: Suited to temperate & Mediterranean SA gardens with irrigation or naturally damp sites
- Soil pH: Acid to Neutral (can handle mildly alkaline if moisture is reliable)
Landscape & Design Ideas
- Rain gardens, swales & pond margins for filtration and stabilisation
- Mass plant for naturalistic meadows and erosion control on damp banks
- Habitat plantings with reeds/rushes to support frogs and small birds
Why You Will Love It
A tough, good-looking native sedge that thrives where other plants struggle—wet or clay spots, swales and pond edges. It binds soil, filters runoff, adds soft movement and fresh green texture year-round, supports frogs and small birds, and stays low-maintenance when mass-planted.
