Silver Banksia / Honeysuckle

Botanical Name: Banksia marginata
Family: Proteaceae
Origin: South-eastern Australia (SA/VIC/NSW/TAS)
Plant Type: Evergreen shrub to small tree

Overview

A versatile, salt-tolerant banksia with pale lemon flower spikes and distinctive leaves that are dark green above and silvery beneath. Flowers mainly autumn–spring (often spot blooms outside peak), providing nectar for birds and pollinators. Excellent as a feature, screen or coastal windbreak in South Australia gardens.

Key Features

  • Mature Size: 2–6 m H × 2–4 m W (naturally variable; can be kept 2–3 m with pruning)
  • Growth Rate: 20-40 cm per year under good conditions
  • Foliage: Narrow to obovate leaves, mid–deep green above, silver-white underside; neat, bushy habit
  • Flowers: Cream to pale yellow cylindrical spikes, mainly autumn–spring
  • Seasonal Interest: Evergreen structure; strongest cool-season blooms
  • Wildlife Value: Heavy nectar for honeyeaters, bees & insects; cones provide seed for birds
  • Tolerance: Drought & heat tolerant once established; Wind & coastal tolerant (handles salt spray); Light frost tolerant
  • Planting Density: Privacy hedge/windbreak: 1–1.5 m apart; Specimen/backdrop: 2–4 m apart
  • Pet Friendly: Generally non-toxic (woody cones are prickly—site away from paths)

Where It Works Best

  • Sunlight: Full sun to part shade
  • Soil: Sandy to loam, well drained (tolerates lighter clay if mounded)
  • Water Needs: Establishment: 2 deep soaks/week for 8–12 weeks. Established: deep soak every 2–3 weeks in summer (weekly in heatwaves); minimal in winter
  • Maintenance: Tip-prune after flowering to keep dense (avoid cuts into old wood); mulch; feed lightly in early spring with low-P native fertiliser
  • Lifespan: 20–40+ years
  • Climate Zones: Temperate & Mediterranean SA, including coastal sites
  • Soil pH: Acidic to neutral, tolerates slightly alkaline better than many banksias

Landscape & Design Ideas

  • Privacy hedge/windbreak for coastal or exposed sites
  • Feature/specimen with year-round presence and cool-season flowers
  • Mixed native border with grevilleas, lomandras and westringias

Why You Will Love It

Silvery two-tone foliage, reliable autumn–spring flowers, and bird-magnet nectar on a tough, low-care evergreen that thrives in SA—especially near the coast.
