Sydney Red Gum / Rusty Gum / Smooth-barked Apple
Botanical Name: Angophora costata
Family: Myrtaceae
Origin: Eastern Australia (NSW–QLD coastal ranges)
Plant Type: Evergreen tree
Overview
A striking Australian native noted for its smooth pink–peach bark that sheds in plates, revealing fresh cream to salmon tones. The broad, rounded crown carries glossy green leaves, and in summer it bears creamy-white flower clusters rich in nectar for bees and birds. Tough once established, it thrives in full sun and free-draining sandy/loamy soils, including coastal sites. Best used as a feature or shade tree where space allows.
