Giant White Bird of Paradise / Giant Bird of Paradise / Wild Banana
Botanical Name: Strelitzia nicolai
Family: Strelitziaceae
Origin: Eastern South Africa & Mozambique
Plant Type: Evergreen clumping shrub (banana-like)
Overview
Strelitzia nicolai brings bold, tropical structure to Adelaide gardens. Huge, paddle-shaped leaves form upright clumps that shrug off heat and coastal wind (tears in leaves are normal and add texture). Striking white-and-indigo “bird” flowers appear mainly spring–summer on mature plants, adding drama and nectar.
Key Features
- Mature Size: 3–6 m H × 2–4 m W in SA (smaller in large pots)
- Growth Rate: 30-60 cm per year under good conditions
- Foliage: Large, architectural, glossy green paddles; leaves may naturally split in wind
-
Flowers: White bracts with dark blue petals, mainly spring–summer (occasional off-season blooms in warm years)
- Seasonal Interest: Year-round evergreen structure; peak flowering in warm months
- Wildlife Value: Nectar-rich blooms can attract honeyeaters and other pollinators
- Tolerance: Drought- and coastal-tolerant once established; wind-tough; light frost tolerant to about –2 °C (protect in colder pockets)
- Planting Density: Screening: 1–1.5 m apart • Specimen/grouping: 1.5–2.5 m apart
- Pet Friendly: No — mildly toxic if ingested; avoid access for pets that chew
Where It Works Best
- Sunlight: Full sun to part shade (bright light = strongest form)
- Soil: Well-drained loam or sandy loam; improve clay and avoid chronic waterlogging (thick roots can lift tight paving—allow space)
- Water Needs: Establishment: 2 deep soaks/week for 8–12 weeks. Established: deep soak every 7–14 days in summer (more in heatwaves); seldom in winter if dry
- Maintenance: Mulch in spring; remove spent flower stems and old leaves at the base; feed in early spring (and midsummer for pots); divide or thin old clumps if needed
- Lifespan: 20–40+ years
- Climate Zones: Suited to temperate & Mediterranean SA, including coastal suburbs; shelter from severe frost in Hills
- Soil pH: Slightly acid to neutral; tolerates mildly alkaline with good drainage
Landscape & Design Ideas
- Poolside hero or architectural backdrop for courtyards
- Tropical mass planting with cordylines, lomandra and blue chalk sticks
- Large statement containers (50–70 cm+) for patios and entrances
