Snow White Hardenbergia

Botanical Name: Hardenbergia violacea Edna Walling 'Snow White'
Family: Fabaceae
Origin: Australia
Plant Type: Evergreen climber/groundcover (can be trained as a shrub)

Overview

A compact native wisteria for South Australian gardens, ‘Snow White’ smothers supports with pure white pea flowers in late winter–spring over glossy mid-green foliage. Fast, low-maintenance and great for fences, trellises and pots.

Key Features

  • Mature Size: 2–3 m H × 1.5–2.5 m W
  • Growth Rate: 30-60 cm per year under good conditions
  • Foliage: Evergreen, mid-green, glossy; new growth may bronze slightly in cool weather
  • Flowers: White pea flowers; lightly fragrant; nectar-rich
  • Seasonal Interest: Heavy flush late winter–spring (Aug–Oct); occasional spot flowers later in mild years
  • Wildlife Value: Attracts bees & butterflies; provides shelter for small birds
  • Tolerance: Drought-tolerant (once established), heat-tolerant, wind-tolerant, second-line coastal-tolerant; light frost (protect from hard frost); clay-tolerant with drainage
  • Planting Density: Fence/trellis: 1 plant per 1–2 metres of run
  • Pet Friendly: Yes — generally non-toxic to pets

Where It Works Best

  • Sunlight: Full sun to part shade (more sun = more flowers)
  • Soil: Well-drained loam or sandy loam; improved light clay ok
  • Water Needs: 2 deep soaks/week for 8–12 weeks. Established: deep soak every 10–14 days in summer; monthly in winter if dry
  • Maintenance: Mulch in spring; light prune after flowering to keep neat and encourage new shoots; feed with slow-release, low-P native fertiliser in early spring
  • Lifespan: 15-25 years
  • Climate Zones: Suited to temperate and Mediterranean SA, including coastal areas
  • Soil pH: Slightly acidic to mildly alkaline

Landscape & Design Ideas

  • Train along fences, trellises, arches and verandahs for quick cover
  • Cascade over walls or banks as a groundcover
  • Large pots with an obelisk/teepee for balconies and entries
