Candy Bells Fuchsia
Botanical Name: Fuchsia × bacillaris ‘Candy Bells’
Family: Onagraceae
Origin: Mexico/Central America (hybrid lineage; compact cultivar)
Plant Type: Evergreen to semi-evergreen subshrub/perennial (mounding)
Overview
A compact, heat-tolerant fuchsia for Adelaide/SA with masses of tiny, tubular pink to red-pink bells for much of the year. Neat, wiry red stems and small leaves make it perfect for pots, shaded borders and alfresco spots with morning sun/bright shade. Best with moist, well-drained soil and protection from hot afternoon sun and hard frosts (Hills).
Key Features
- Mature Size: 0.6–1.0 m H × 0.6–1.0 m W (naturally bushy)
- Growth Rate: 20-40 cm per year under good conditions
- Foliage: Small, dark to mid-green leaves on fine, often reddish stems; tidy texture
-
Flowers: Slender, tubular pink to magenta bells, heaviest spring–autumn (often Sept–May in SA’s mild seasons)
- Seasonal Interest: Very long flowering window; fine texture year-round (semi-evergreen in mild winters)
- Wildlife Value: Nectar for pollinators (small bees/insects)
- Tolerance: Not drought-tolerant; heat-tolerant with shade and regular water; wind-tolerant if sheltered; light–moderate frost (protect from hard frosts). Full sun only in cool/coastal positions with irrigation
- Planting Density: Edging/low hedge: 3 per metre (≈30–40 cm centres). Mass: 4–6 plants/m². Containers: one per 200–300 mm pot; tip-prune to shape
- Pet Friendly: Generally non-toxic (ingestion of any plant may upset pets)
Where It Works Best
- Sunlight: Morning sun/bright indirect light–part shade. Avoid hot Adelaide afternoon sun; provide pergola/eaves shade in summer
- Soil: Moist, well-drained premium mix or loam; add compost. On calcareous SA soils, a little iron chelate if foliage pales
- Water Needs: Establishment: keep evenly moist for 8–12 weeks. Established: deep soak weekly in summer (twice weekly in heatwaves); reduce in winter but don’t let dry out
- Maintenance: Light, regular tip-pruning to keep dense and trigger more bloom; dead-head spent sprays. Slow-release fertiliser in spring; mulch to conserve moisture. Frost protection in Hills
- Lifespan: 5–8+ years in pots/beds with consistent care
- Climate Zones: Temperate & Mediterranean SA—best on Adelaide Plains and second-line coastal; protect from extreme heat and frost in the Hills
- Soil pH: Slightly acidic–neutral–slightly alkaline if well-drained
Landscape & Design Ideas
- Alfresco containers and under-pergola planters for near-year-round colour
- Shaded borders/courtyards with clivias, aspidistra and ferns
- Soft spillover for steps and low walls in morning sun sites
