Seaside Daisy / Mexican Fleabane
Botanical Name: Erigeron karvinskianus ‘Spindrift’
Family: Asteraceae
Origin: Mexico & Central America (garden cultivar)
Plant Type: Evergreen to semi-evergreen perennial groundcover (mounding, trailing)
Overview
A cottage-style daisy carpet that thrives in Adelaide/SA. ‘Spindrift’ forms soft mounds that spill over edges and through cracks, flowering for months from spring into late autumn. Single daisies open white, then age blush pink/rose around a yellow eye—so you get white and pink on the plant at once. Ideal for steps, stone walls, pots, and “green grout” between pavers. Tough in heat once established; just avoid waterlogged winter clay.
Key Features
- Mature Size: 0.2–0.3 m H × 0.4–0.8 m W (can drape further over edges)
- Growth Rate: 20–40 cm spread per year under good conditions
- Foliage: Small, narrow, mid-green leaves; soft, fine texture
-
Flowers: Small white daisies aging pink, yellow centres; spring–autumn, with spot bloom in mild winters
- Seasonal Interest: Very long flowering window; evergreen mounds in winter
- Wildlife Value: Nectar/pollen for bees, hoverflies & butterflies
- Tolerance: Drought-tolerant once established, heat & wind-tolerant; second-line coastal OK; light–moderate frost hardy on the Plains (protect from severe Hills frosts); dislikes winter waterlogging
- Planting Density: Edging/paths: 3 per metre (≈ 30–40 cm centres); Mass groundcover: 6–9 plants/m²; Between pavers/stonework: 6–8 plants per linear metre of joints
- Pet Friendly: Generally non-toxic; any plant ingestion may upset tummies
Where It Works Best
- Sunlight: Full sun to light part shade (best flowering in sun)
- Soil: Well-drained sandy/loam; copes with poorer, calcareous (alkaline) Adelaide soils; raise/mound on clay to keep crowns dry in winter
- Water Needs: Establishment: Keep evenly moist for 8–12 weeks; Established: Deep soak every 2–3 weeks in summer (weekly in heatwaves); minimal in winter
- Maintenance: Shear back by ⅓ after a main flush (late spring or late summer) to re-bud and keep tidy; light dead-heading extends bloom. May self-seed in cracks—remove spent heads if you want to limit spread
- Lifespan: 3–5+ years (easy to refresh by division or allowing a few seedlings)
- Climate Zones: Temperate & Mediterranean SA—excellent on Adelaide Plains and second-line coastal; choose a frost-sheltered, free-draining site in the Hills
- Soil pH: Neutral to alkaline (tolerates slightly acidic if well-drained)
Landscape & Design Ideas
- Soft edging for paths and steps
- Stone walls & rockeries (spills and cascades beautifully)
- Cottage & Mediterranean borders with rosemary, salvias and grasses
- Pots & troughs as a long-flowering filler/spiller
