Pinnacle Lilly Pilly

Botanical Name: Syzygium Australe 'Pinnacle'
Family: Myrtaceae
Origin: Eastern Australia
Plant Type: Evergreen shrub

Overview

Syzygium australe ‘Pinnacle’ is the go-to narrow lilly pilly for Adelaide when space is tight but you want height and polish. Naturally columnar (no constant shearing needed), it rockets up to form a slim, dense green screen. Fresh bronze new growth contrasts with the glossy mature foliage; fluffy white spring–summer flowers may be followed by pink-red berries if you don’t clip immediately after bloom. Bred for tight form and good psyllid resistance, it’s ideal along fences, driveways and courtyard boundaries.

Key Features

  • Mature Size: 3–6 m H × 0.8–1.5 m W (easily kept to 2.5–4 m with pruning)
  • Growth Rate: 40-60 cm per year under good conditions
  • Foliage: Glossy mid-green leaves with bronze/red new growth; naturally upright, pencil-narrow habit
  • Flowers: Small, fluffy white sprays mainly spring–summer; pink–red berries late summer–autumn if unpruned
  • Seasonal Interest: Year-round evergreen structure with repeated colourful flushes; spring flowers and occasional berries
  • Wildlife Value: Nectar for bees/beneficials; berries may feed birds; dense cover for small birds
  • Tolerance: Drought-tolerant once established; heat, wind & coastal tolerant; light frost tolerant; handles regular clipping; good psyllid resistance in SA conditions
  • Planting Density: Hedge: 0.7–1.0 m apart (0.5–0.7 m for a super-tight screen) • Specimen/columns: 1.2–1.8 m apart
  • Pet Friendly: Yes — generally non-toxic; ripe berries are edible (moderation advised)

Where It Works Best

  • Sunlight: Full sun to part shade (more sun = tighter growth and stronger colour)
  • Soil: Well-drained loam, sandy loam or improved clay loam; avoid chronic waterlogging; thrives in raised beds and large pots
  • Water Needs: Establishment: 2 deep soaks/week for 8–12 weeks. Established: deep soak every 10–14 days in summer (more in heatwaves); monthly in winter if dry
  • Maintenance: Mulch in spring; tip-prune after each flush (or 3–6×/yr) to keep hedges dense and columns slim; clip after flowering if you want to limit fruit; feed in early spring with a low-phosphorus native fertiliser
  • Lifespan: 20–30+ years
  • Climate Zones: Suited to temperate & Mediterranean SA, including coastal suburbs
  • Soil pH: Slightly acidic to neutral; tolerates mildly alkaline with sharp drainage

Landscape & Design Ideas

  • Narrow privacy hedges that stay inside small boundaries and setbacks
  • Tall green columns to frame entries, gates and outdoor rooms
  • Mass plant along long fences/driveways for a sleek, modern backbone; excellent in large pots for vertical emphasis on terraces

Why You Will Love It
