Tussock Grass / Common Tussock Grass / River Tussock

Botanical Name: Poa labillardieri
Family: Poaceae
Origin: Australia (widespread SE Australia, including SA)
Plant Type: Evergreen to semi-evergreen native tussock grass

Overview

Poa labillardieri is a hardy, fine to medium-textured native tussock grass ideal for Adelaide and South Australian landscapes. Forming attractive blue-green clumps that move beautifully in the wind, it thrives in both coastal and inland conditions and tolerates drought, frost, wind, and occasional waterlogging once established. In SA gardens it provides soft texture, structure, erosion control, and reliable year-round colour. Tall, airy flower stems appear in spring–summer, adding movement and ornamental value. This species performs extremely well in mass plantings, nature strips, revegetation projects, native gardens, and contemporary landscapes requiring a tough yet elegant low-water grass.

Key Features

  • Mature Size: 0.6–1.2 m H × 0.5–1.0 m W (forming upright, fountain-shaped tussocks)
  • Growth Rate: 20–40 cm per year under good conditions
  • Foliage: lue-green to grey-green narrow leaves forming dense tussocks; may develop golden or silvery tones in winter or dry periods
  • Flowers: Tall, airy cream to purplish seedheads in late spring–summer, adding softness and movement
  • Seasonal Interest: Evergreen texture year-round with ornamental flower plumes in spring–summer and subtle winter foliage colour shifts
  • Wildlife Value: Provides habitat for beneficial insects, shelter for small birds, and seeds that attract insects and small fauna
  • Tolerance: Drought-tolerant once established; highly heat-tolerant; wind-tolerant; excellent coastal tolerance; frost hardy; tolerates occasional wet soils better than many native grasses
  • Planting Density: 4–6 plants per m² for mass planting; 0.6–1 m spacing for borders or drifts
  • Pet Friendly: Non-toxic to cats and dogs

Where It Works Best

  • Sunlight: Full sun to part shade (full sun produces the most compact, colourful foliage)
  • Soil: Adaptable — thrives in sandy, loamy and clay-loam soils; tolerates poor, rocky and coastal soils; avoid prolonged waterlogging
  • Water Needs: Establishment: 2 deep soaks/week for 8–12 weeks. Established: deep soak every 2-3 weeks in summer; minimal water needed in winter
  • Maintenance: Low-maintenance — remove old spent foliage as needed; cut back to 15–20 cm every 2–3 years to rejuvenate; avoid over-fertilising
  • Lifespan: 8–15+ years in suitable conditions
  • Climate Zones: Excellent for Mediterranean and temperate SA — Adelaide plains, foothills, Fleurieu, Yorke Peninsula, coastal regions
  • Soil pH: Neutral to slightly alkaline; tolerates slightly acidic soils

Landscape & Design Ideas

  • Soft, flowing mass planting in native or contemporary landscapes
  • Erosion control for slopes and banks
  • Coastal plantings with Lomandra, Dianella, Leucophyta and Correa
  • Nature strips and verges requiring low maintenance and drought resilience
  • Mixed native beds for colour and texture contrast

Why You Will Love It

Poa labillardieri is one of South Australia’s most versatile native grasses, offering elegance, movement and resilience with almost no care. Its drought and coastal toughness, beautiful blue-green foliage, and airy summer seedheads make it a standout for modern and native-style Adelaide gardens. It thrives on neglect, copes with extreme conditions, and brings long-lasting structure and softness to any landscape.
