Moonlight Grevillea

Botanical Name: Grevillea whiteana ‘Moonlight’
Family: Proteaceae
Origin: Australia (hybrid selection)
Plant Type: Evergreen shrub to small tree

Overview

A striking, upright grevillea with elegant creamy-yellow flower spikes, Grevillea ‘Moonlight’ is a proven performer in Adelaide and across South Australia. Valued for its fast growth, architectural form and long flowering season, it produces large, softly coloured blooms for much of the year, with peak displays from autumn through spring. Tough, drought-tolerant once established and highly attractive to birds, it makes an excellent feature shrub, screening plant or informal small tree in native, coastal and modern landscapes.

Key Features

  • Mature Size: 4–6 m H × 3–4 m W (can be maintained smaller with pruning)
  • Growth Rate: 40–80 cm per year under good conditions
  • Foliage: Evergreen; long, narrow, deep green leaves with a soft, weeping habit; new growth may show pale bronze or olive tints
  • Flowers: Large creamy-white to pale yellow toothbrush-style flower spikes; produced over much of the year, strongest from autumn to spring
  • Fragrance: Not strongly fragrant
  • Seasonal Interest: Evergreen structure year-round with extended flowering through cooler months
  • Wildlife Value: Excellent nectar source for honeyeaters, bees and other pollinators
  • Tolerance: Drought tolerant once established; excellent heat and wind tolerance; coastal tolerant (second-line, occasionally first-line with good drainage); light frost hardy
  • Planting Density: Screening or feature planting: 2–3 m apart; informal hedge: 2–2.5 m spacing
  • Pet Friendly: Generally considered non-toxic; sap may irritate sensitive skin

Where It Works Best

  • Sunlight: Full sun to light part shade (best flowering in full sun)
  • Soil: Well-drained sandy or loamy soils; tolerates clay if drainage is improved; avoid waterlogging; use low-phosphorus native fertiliser only
  • Water Needs: Establishment: 2 deep soaks per week for 8–12 weeks. Established: deep soak every 10–14 days in summer; minimal watering in winter unless very dry
  • Maintenance: Low; light prune after flowering to maintain shape and encourage bushiness (avoid cutting into old bare wood); mulch annually
  • Lifespan: 15–25+ years
  • Climate Zones: Well suited to Mediterranean and temperate South Australia, including Adelaide plains, Fleurieu Peninsula and sheltered coastal sites
  • Soil pH: Slightly acidic to neutral preferred; tolerates mildly alkaline soils with good drainage
