Bronze Rambler Grevillea

Botanical Name: Grevillea ‘Bronze Rambler’
Family: Proteaceae
Origin: Australia (hybrid cultivar)
Plant Type: Evergreen prostrate shrub / spreading groundcover

Overview

Grevillea ‘Bronze Rambler’ is a vigorous, low-growing Australian native groundcover prized for its fast-spreading habit, bronze-toned new growth and masses of nectar-rich flowers. Exceptionally well suited to Adelaide’s Mediterranean climate, it thrives in heat, wind, poor soils and low rainfall once established. Its dense, cascading form makes it ideal for large groundcover areas, banks, retaining walls and erosion control, while also providing outstanding wildlife value. Tough, long-lived and low-maintenance, this grevillea is a reliable performer across much of South Australia.

Key Features

  • Mature Size: 0.3–0.5 m H × 3–5 m W (prostrate, wide-spreading habit)
  • Growth Rate: 40–80 cm of lateral spread per year under good conditions
  • Foliage: Small, fine-textured leaves; mid-green when mature with bronze to copper-toned new growth, especially in cool weather or active growth phases
  • Flowers: Clusters of soft pink to pink-red spider-style flowers, mainly winter through spring, with sporadic flowering at other times of year
  • Fragrance: Not fragrant; foliage may have a faint resinous native scent when handled
  • Seasonal Interest: EEvergreen foliage year-round with colourful bronze new growth and a strong winter–spring flowering display that provides interest when many plants are dormant
  • Wildlife Value: Highly attractive to honeyeaters, native bees and other pollinators. Dense, spreading growth also provides shelter for small birds and ground-dwelling fauna
  • Tolerance: Drought tolerant once established; highly heat and wind tolerant; coastal tolerant (second-line and occasionally first-line with excellent drainage); light frost hardy; thrives in poor, sandy or rocky soils but dislikes waterlogging
  • Planting Density: Groundcover use: 1 plant per 3–4 m²; bank stabilisation or spill-over planting: space 2–3 m apart
  • Pet Friendly: Generally safe, though grevillea foliage can irritate sensitive skin. Discourage chewing or excessive contact for pets with sensitivities

Where It Works Best

  • Sunlight: Full sun for best flowering and dense growth; tolerates light part shade with reduced flowering
  • Soil: Free-draining sandy, loamy or gravelly soils; performs well on limestone soils common around Adelaide
  • Water Needs: Establishment: 2 deep soaks/week for 8–12 weeks. Established: deep soak every 10–14 days in summer; little to no water required in winter
  • Maintenance: Very low. Light tip-prune after flowering to maintain shape and encourage density. Avoid hard pruning into old wood. Use low-phosphorus native fertiliser only if required
  • Lifespan: 15–25+ years in well-drained conditions
  • Climate Zones: Ideal for Mediterranean and temperate South Australia — Adelaide Plains, foothills, Fleurieu Peninsula, Yorke Peninsula and coastal suburbs
  • Soil pH: Slightly acidic to mildly alkaline; performs well on limestone with sharp drainage

Landscape & Design Ideas

  • Broad-scale native groundcover for large areas
  • Bank stabilisation and erosion control on slopes
