Overview

A tall, soft-shouldered U that lifts a plant to eye level. The Sorento is the pedestal of the range — narrow at the base, curving up and out, so a weeping standard or a plume of grass reads as sculpture rather than landscaping. The warm Taupe terrazzo keeps it soft against render, brick and timber alike.

Crafted from a fibre-clay composite — magnesium chloride reinforced with fibreglass — the Sorento is UV-stable and weatherproof, yet remarkably lightweight for its height. The largest stands 75 cm tall and weighs 11 kg empty, so one person can still place it. A drainage plug is included, so you can plant directly or use it as a cache pot.

• Small — 17 L: 26 × 45 cm (W × H). Opening 18 cm — fits a plant up to a 140 mm nursery pot. Around 1 bag of potting mix to fill.
• Medium — 43 L: 36 × 60 cm (W × H). Opening 26 cm — fits a plant up to a 200 mm nursery pot. Around 2 bags of potting mix to fill.
• Large — 89 L: 46 × 75 cm (W × H). Opening 35 cm — fits a plant up to a 300 mm nursery pot. Around 3 bags of potting mix to fill.

These are tall pots rather than wide ones — the height is doing the work. Choose by the opening rather than the litres, and remember a tall pot with a top-heavy plant appreciates a sheltered spot or a few stones in the base on a windy balcony.

Sealing & Care

Fibre-clay is naturally porous, so it is worth brushing a pot and ornamental sealer around the inside of the pot before you plant. It forms a waterproof barrier that stops moisture and fertiliser salts wicking out through the wall — the cause of the pale tide marks and chalky white bloom you see on older pots — and it adds years to the life of the pot.

Sealers are water-based and brush on like paint; most hardware stores carry one. Coat the inside walls and the base, let it cure as directed, then plant as normal. It is worth the extra half hour on any pot going indoors, onto a deck, or onto paving where a damp ring would show — and together with the drainage plug supplied, it is what lets you use these inside without marking the floor.
