Kaffir Lily / Bush Lily / Clivia

Botanical Name: Clivia miniata
Family: Amaryllidaceae
Origin: Eastern South Africa (forest understory)
Plant Type: Evergreen clump-forming perennial (rhizomatous)

Overview

A shade-loving classic for Adelaide/SA, forming tidy fans of glossy, strap-like leaves and clusters of rich orange trumpets (yellow forms exist) in late winter–spring. Thrives in dry shade once established—perfect under eaves, in courtyards and beneath trees on the Adelaide Plains. In the Hills, protect from frost and cold winds.

Key Features

  • Mature Size: 0.45–0.7 m H × 0.4–0.7 m W (clump); flower stems to ~0.5–0.6 m
  • Growth Rate: 10-20 cm per year under good conditions
  • Foliage: Broad, strap-like, deep green; neat, architectural fans
  • Flowers: Rounded umbels of orange to deep orange trumpets with yellow throats, mainly late winter–spring (Aug–Oct)
  • Seasonal Interest: Evergreen structure year-round; reliable late winter–spring colour
  • Wildlife Value: Nectar for bees/beneficials; fleshy berries (if left) interest birds
  • Tolerance: Drought-tolerant in shade once established; heat-tolerant in shade; wind-tolerant only in sheltered spots; not coastal front-line; light frost can scorch—protect in Hills; handles clay loam if raised/improved
  • Planting Density: Borders/edging: 3 per metre (≈30–40 cm centres); Mass: 4–6 plants/m²; Containers: 20–30 cm pots, step up as clumps thicken
  • Pet Friendly: Toxic to cats & dogs if ingested (alkaloids); site away from pets that chew plants

Where It Works Best

  • Sunlight: Part shade to deep shade (morning winter sun OK); avoid hot afternoon summer sun
  • Soil: Well-drained, humus-rich loam; add compost/leaf mould; raise/mound on heavier clays to prevent winter wet feet
  • Water Needs: Establishment: keep evenly moist for 8–12 weeks (don’t waterlog). Established: deep soak every 2–3 weeks in summer (weekly in heatwaves); minimal in winter
  • Maintenance: Remove spent flower stalks at base; tidy old leaves; divide after flowering every 4–5 years to rejuvenate; light feed in spring with slow-release, balanced fertiliser
  • Lifespan: 10–20+ years in containers or sheltered ground
  • Climate Zones: Temperate & Mediterranean SA—best on Adelaide Plains/coastal second-line; frost-prone Hills require protection or indoor culture
  • Soil pH: Slightly acidic to neutral (tolerates slightly alkaline in organic-rich mix)

Landscape & Design Ideas

  • Dry-shade ribbons under deciduous trees (enjoying winter light)
  • Shaded courtyards and under-eave beds with aspidistra and ferns
  • Container features for entries and pergolas (low maintenance)
