Kangaroo Paw Bush Pearl

Botanical Name: Anigozanthos ‘Bush Pearl’ (Bush Gems® hybrid; not a true A. flavidus cultivar)
Family: Haemodoraceae
Origin: Western Australia (cultivar from the Bush Gems® breeding program)
Plant Type: Evergreen clump-forming perennial (rhizomatous)

Overview

A compact kangaroo paw with candy-pink to pale pink blooms on branched stems and neat fans of strappy green foliage. Flowers mainly spring–summer, with repeat spikes in warm climates; excellent for pots, borders and mass planting, and loved by pollinators.

Key Features

  • Mature Size: 0.3–0.4 m H × 0.4–0.6 m W (foliage); flower stems to 0.45–0.6 m
  • Growth Rate: 15-30 cm per year under good conditions
  • Foliage: Evergreen, strappy mid-green leaves in dense fans
  • Flowers: Bright pink/candy-pink “paw” blooms mainly spring–summer, with potential extended flowering in mild areas
  • Seasonal Interest: Long spring–summer show; may spot-flower outside peak in warm climates
  • Wildlife Value: Nectar-rich—honeyeaters & bees
  • Tolerance: Drought & heat tolerant once established; light frost; second-line coastal tolerant
  • Planting Density: Borders/edging: 3 per metre (≈ 30–40 cm centres); Mass planting: 4–6 plants/m² (≈ 40–50 cm apart); Containers: 25–35 cm pots; size up as clumps thicken
  • Pet Friendly: Non-toxic to cats & dogs (leaf hairs can irritate sensitive skin—gloves recommended)

Where It Works Best

  • Sunlight: Full sun (best flowering) to light part shade
  • Soil: Well-drained sandy/loam; raise/mound on heavier sites
  • Water Needs: Establishment: 2 deep soaks/week for 8–12 weeks. Established: deep soak every 2–3 weeks in summer (weekly in heatwaves); minimal in winter
  • Maintenance: Cut spent flower stems at the base and remove old leaf fans; light feed in spring with low-phosphorus native fertiliser. Divide clumps every 3–4 years
  • Lifespan: 5–10+ years in well-drained sites
  • Climate Zones: Temperate & Mediterranean SA; sheltered coastal OK
  • Soil pH: Neutral (tolerates slightly acidic–slightly alkaline)

Landscape & Design Ideas

  • Mass plant for a pink seasonal ribbon
  • Sunny borders with grasses/greys
  • Feature clumps in gravel gardens
  • Cut flowers (good vase life)
