Redpointe® Red Maple / Redpointe® Maple / Lipstick Maple
Botanical Name: Acer rubrum ‘Frank Jr.’ Redpointe®
Family: Sapindaceae
Origin: North America (cultivar selected in the USA)
Plant Type: Deciduous tree
Overview
A fast, durable maple with a strong central leader and a broadly pyramidal crown, Redpointe® delivers brilliant red autumn colour and neat summer form. It pairs classic red-maple looks with improved vigour and structure—great as a feature or avenue tree in temperate SA.
Key Features
- Mature Size: 12-15 m H x 7-10 m W
- Growth Rate: 60-90 cm per year under good conditions
- Foliage: Dark green, five-lobed leaves turning vivid red in autumn
- Flowers: Inconspicuous; grown for foliage and autumn colour
- Seasonal Interest: Cooling summer shade; spectacular red autumn display
- Wildlife Value: Canopy/nesting structure for birds
- Tolerance: Frost hardy; heat and wind tolerant
- Planting Density: Avenue/specimen: 6–8 m apart (≈1 tree per 36–64 m²), depending on canopy
- Pet Friendly: Non-toxic to cats & dogs. Toxic to horses if they eat wilted/dried red-maple leaves—don’t plant where horses can access leaf fall.
Where It Works Best
- Sunlight: Full sun to part shade
- Soil: Loam, sandy loam or clay loam with good drainage
- Water Needs: Establishment: 2 deep soaks/week for 8–12 weeks. Established: deep soak every 2–3 weeks in summer (weekly in heatwaves); seldom in winter unless dry
- Maintenance: Mulch in spring; structural prune when young to build a strong frame
- Lifespan: 25–50+ years in good conditions
- Climate Zones: Temperate SA; avoid frontline coastal salt
- Soil pH: Neutral (best). Adaptable, with improved tolerance to slightly alkaline soils vs. many red maples; monitor for chlorosis on high-pH sites
Landscape & Design Ideas
- Feature/statement tree for lawn or verge
- Avenue/driveway planting
- Shade tree for outdoor living (allow canopy space)
