Great Balls of Fire Bottlebrush / Willow Bottlebrush

Botanical Name: Callistemon salignus ‘Great Balls of Fire’ (syn. Melaleuca salicina ‘Great Balls of Fire’)
Family: Myrtaceae
Origin: Australia (garden cultivar selection)
Plant Type: Evergreen shrub

Overview

A compact, foliage-first bottlebrush famed for its brilliant pink–red new growth that matures to fresh green. Naturally dense and clip-tolerant, it’s ideal for low hedges, borders, topiary “balls” and containers. Flowers are rare/insignificant (occasional small cream brushes), so grow it for the colour and texture.

Key Features

  • Mature Size: 0.8–1.2 m H × 0.8–1.2 m W (smaller if regularly clipped)
  • Growth Rate: 20-40 cm per year under good conditions
  • Foliage: Narrow leaves; intense pink/copper-red new growth, ageing green
  • Flowers: Occasional small cream bottlebrush (often pruned off; not a feature)
  • Seasonal Interest: Repeated flushes of colourful new growth spring–autumn (strongest after light pruning); evergreen structure in winter
  • Wildlife Value: Shelter for small birds/beneficials; nectar only if flowers are allowed
  • Tolerance: Drought-tolerant (once established), heat-tolerant, wind-tolerant, second-line coastal-tolerant; light frost (protect from hard frost)
  • Planting Density: Low hedge/border: 3–5 per metre (≈ 20–35 cm centres); Mass planting/topiary balls: 3–4 per m²; Specimen/containers: one per pot; clip to shape
  • Pet Friendly: Non-toxic to cats & dogs

Where It Works Best

  • Sunlight: Full sun to light part shade (best colour in sun)
  • Soil: Well-drained sandy/loam to clay loam; mound on heavy sites
  • Water Needs: Establishment: 2 deep soaks/week for 8–12 weeks. Established: deep soak every 10–14 days in summer (weekly in heatwaves); minimal in winter
  • Maintenance: Lightly prune 2–4×/yr to keep dense and trigger new pink growth; mulch; feed in early spring with low-P native fertiliser
  • Lifespan: 15-25+ years
  • Climate Zones: Temperate & Mediterranean SA, including coastal areas
  • Soil pH: Neutral; tolerates slightly acidic–slightly alkaline

Landscape & Design Ideas

  • Low formal hedge/edging with vivid flushes
  • Topiary spheres for entrances and pots
  • Mass plant for a colourful, low-maintenance ground-level border
